Final Results
DETROIT - The men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open this weekend at Wayne State with the men's team capturing three of the top four fencing positions including an individual gold and bronze medal in the foil event.
Junior
Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Ind. Studies) led all Titan fencers winning a gold medal taking first place in the men's foil. The medal marks the second straight year Purdy-Sachs has won the gold and sixth straight year a Detroit men's fencer has won gold in the foil event.
Freshman
Yaroslav Ivanov (Louisville, KY/Ballard) earned the bronze medal and
Brad Coon (Jenison, MI/Hudsonville) finished fourth on the day in the men's foil.
In the men's sabre event, senior
Tom Lorenzo (Avon, OH/St. Ignatius) took fourth place and freshman
Logan Clements (Swartz Creek MI/Swartz Creek) won the eighth spot in the men's sabre. Senior
Tim Nelson (Riverview, MI/Gabriel Richard) also had a Top-8 finish placing seventh in men's epee.
“We have had a good run at this tournament with our men's team earning the gold in men's foil today for the sixth straight year,” said head coach
Todd Dressell.
On the women's side, freshman
Ariel Skellet (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) fenced her way to a sixth place finish in women's sabre and freshman
Sarah Armitage (Canton, MI/Plymouth) had a ninth place finish in women's foil.
“We had a few individuals making their fencing debuts today and in that respect, I think we can be pleased. Until our next competition, we will work to improve our results and take certain aspects a step further,” added Dressell.
Competing in today's event with Detroit were fencers from host Wayne State, the University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Western Ontario.
The next event for the fencing team will be after the new years on January 15 as they will compete at the Cleveland State Duals.
