Senior Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) handed out a career-high 11 assists and sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) posted his eighth double-double of the season, but Detroit saw Milwaukee hit 12 3-pointers to take the contest, 71-60, on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

The game was played with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing serving as a guest coach. Mayor Bing was the halftime guest on the Horizon League Network and addressed the crowd during the game.

Holman had 13 points and a career-best 18 rebounds. Payne also collected four steals and scored nine points on the night. Senior Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) had 13 points and four boards, while sophomore Chase Simon (Detroit, MI/Community) added 11 markers and had four rebounds.

“Eli was a warrior,” said head coach Ray McCallum. “I thought this was his most aggressive game in the last five, but we have to have more guys going after the ball than we did."

UDM (15-12, 7-8 HL) got off to a fast start, scoring the first six points and later taking its largest lead of the game, 13-5, just five minutes in. Milwaukee (14-12, 6-8 HL) recovered and would take a five-point lead in the first half before heading into intermission up 32-31.

The Titans looked like they were going to make another second-half run to steal the game as Detroit cut a 12-point deficit, 59-47, down to five, 59-54, with 5:06 left to play. Holman started the quick spurt with a put back off an offensive rebound. Kennedy then followed with a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to get the home team right back in it.

The Panthers, though, were able to recover and extend their advantage back up to double digits.

"This was a spot we really haven't been in, the way we finished the game,” said McCallum. “We've been a second-half team this year. They were able to spread us out, and drive us and they made their 3's. Our defense let up some. Our defense has held up since the first game, even when we had trouble scoring at times, but this time we had problems on defense.”

Both teams shot over 40 percent, but the Panthers hit 12 of its 32 attempts from long range and that was the difference in the game. UDM did force 15 Panther turnovers.

Detroit will now get ready for a mid-week conference contest as the Titans play at Wright State on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
