Pronk Second, Titans Fourth, at St. John's Golf Invitational

Junior Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) fired a final-round 69 and the Titan men's golfers climbed one place in the standings to finish fourth Sunday at the Mission Inn Spring Fling.

The tournament, hosted by St. John's, was contested at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL.

Pronk's round represented the individual final-round low and was one off his career best as he came in second on the leader board (77-69-146), one shot behind medalist Mark McGuire of St. Leo. Junior Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek), the overnight leader, was next in line for the Titans as he finished in a tie for 18th place (72-82-154).

Detroit improved by 10 strokes after posting an opening 307 on Saturday – Friday's first round was rained out – and remained squarely in the thick of things as the four top teams were separated by just six shots in the final standings. St. Leo, the only team to post a better score than Detroit on Sunday, won the tournament with a 598 total, while Florida Gulf Coast (601) and Stetson (603) rounded out the all-Florida trio ahead of Detroit (604). Appalachian State (617) completed the first five.

“Britt and Jeff each put together an outstanding round to lead us and, overall, we did pretty well. We beat a lot of good teams like Morehead State, St. John's and UConn. That was the goal, considering there were a plenty of southern teams in the field who have been out on the course this spring a lot more than we have,” coach Mark Engel noted. “We had to handle a lot of wind, and some tough putting conditions, and this tournament and the whole week we spent down south gave us a lot to build on.”

The Titans will resume action March 27-28 at Ball State's Cardinal Classic in Jasper, IN.
