The Detroit Titans women's basketball team was honored at the annual end-of-the-year banquet Thursday evening at Roma Café in downtown Detroit. UDM had a lot to celebrate as the Titans closed out the 2009-10 campaign with an overall mark of 17-14, which is the most total wins for Detroit since 2000-01.

The Titans also improved from last year in Horizon League standings as they ended the season tied for second place in the conference with a 14-4 record.

The team handed out six awards toward the end of the program, with senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) headlining as she was named Most Valuable Player. Mulroy became the first Titan since 2002 to earn All-Horizon League First Team honors. After being a walk-on her first two years with the Titans, Mulroy ranked top 5 in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage all season long, except for one week, and ends her career sixth all-time in Detroit's record books with 160 career 3-pointers. In addition, Mulroy is one of eight women selected to compete in the 22nd Annual State Farm 3-Point Championship.

Mulroy scored 20 or more points seven times this season and led or tied for the lead among teammates in scoring on 13 occasions. Mulroy netted a career-high 27 points against nationally-ranked Michigan State and also poured in a personal-best of six treys in a single game three times during the year. Another highlight for Mulroy this season came on Jan. 14 when she nailed one from long range as time expired to help lift Detroit to a 66-65 victory over visiting UIC, which led to her being named Horizon League Player of the Week for the second time this year.

Sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest), who received a medical hardship waiver for the 2008-09 season, was named Top Newcomer and also earned the Hustle Award. Shayok received Horizon League accolades as she was named the 2009-10 HL Newcomer of the Year, which earned her a spot on the All-Newcomer Team, and she was named to the all-conference second team.

Shayok is one of three Titans who started every game this year and ended the season 13th in the Horizon League in scoring average (11.8 ppg), first in defensive rebounds (6.8) and second in offensive rebounds (2.9). Shayok has sat in the top 3 among her conference peers in rebounding all year and is currently 36th in the nation with an average of 9.7 rpg. She collected 10 double-doubles on the year, grabbed double digit rebounds 16 times, scored in double figures 21 times and led or tied for the lead among her teammates in rebounds on 24 occasions.

Sophomore Sierra Spaude (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sturgeon Bay) earned the Comeback Player of the Year Award. Spaude sat out the 2008-09 season due to the NCAA transfer rule, but was still injured a few times throughout the year. This season, Spaude suffered a broken foot prior to the start of school but, after extensive rehab, was able to return mid-season. Spaude played in 20 games and received the starting nod the last 13 contests and ended the season averaging 5.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg and dished out a team fourth-best 28 assists and her career-high of 20 points came against Youngstown State on Jan. 28.

The Most Improved Player Award was given to sophomore Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester), who played in 31 games and was in the starting line-up 28 times, including every Horizon League contest. Allen averaged 7.5 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per contest, compared to averaging 5.2 ppg and 3.0 rpg a year ago. She led or tied for the lead among teammates in scoring on four occasions this season, including a career-high 19-point showing against Milwaukee on Feb. 6. She averaged a team second-best 4.1 assists per game and dished out a personal-best eight helpers, twice, with the last also coming versus the Panthers.

Sophomore Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) earned the Coach's Award for her stellar efforts during her second year with the Titans. Jones was one of three players to start every game for Detroit and she ended the season third among teammates in scoring average (9.8 ppg). Jones averaged 5.1 assists per game to end the season first among conference peers and she currently sits 31st in the nation in this category.

In addition, Jones finished her sophomore year fifth in the Horizon League in assist/turnover ratio (1.5) and in a tie for seventh in steals (1.7 spg). She scored a career-high 20 points in Detroit's win over Loyola in the Horizon League Championship Quarter-Finals (Mar. 10), dished out a personal-best six steals at Valparaiso (Jan. 21) and dished out a season-high nine assists at Wright State (Mar. 6).

She ended the season fourth among teammates in scoring average (8.0 ppg) and averaged 2.7 rebounds per game.
