A great team effort, especially on the defensive side, was the story on Friday evening as the Detroit men's basketball team advanced to the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship semi-finals with a 62-53 victory over Green Bay at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

It is the Titans' first semi-finals appearance since making the finals in 2005. Detroit also recorded its first 20-win season (20-13) since going 25-12 in 2001.

Sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) led the way with his 11th double-double of the season, and the second straight in the conference tournament, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) added 12 points and the Titans shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line, hitting 20 of its 24 attempts, and 44 percent from the field for the game.

Detroit held Green Bay to just 37 percent from the field and 18 percent from three-point range. The Titans also kept the Phoenix top scorer and first team All-League guard Rahmon Fletcher, who was second in the conference at 16.6 ppg., to just three points on 1-of-10 shooting. Fletcher averaged 20 points against Detroit in the regular season. UDM also forced 16 turnovers.

The Titans led from start to finish as Holman scored the first six points of the game, all inside the paint. Detroit continued to add on to the lead, but could never get its advantage over eight points, but the Phoenix was able to cut it down to two with 35 seconds left in the half. Senior Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) then came up with a big shot as time was winding down hitting a trey to give Detroit a five-point lead at the half, 31-26.

The second stanza saw UDM extend its lead to double digits with 11 minutes left in the game. Up by five, 37-32, the Titans scored six straight points to go up by 11. Kennedy scored five in that spurt, while sophomore Chase Simon's (Detroit, MI/Community) free throw gave UDM a 43-32 lead.

Green Bay never really threatened to take the lead, getting as close as five points with 1:25 left, but the red, white and blue was 10-for-10 at the line to close out the contest.

Kennedy finished the game with eight points, while senior Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) added seven points and five assists. Senior Eugene Blue (Flint, MI/Northern) came off the bench to score six points, connecting on all three of his field goals in just nine minutes of action, while Simon netted five.

UDM, the seventh seed, will now face the tournament's number two seed in Wright State on Saturday. Game time is set for 5:15 p.m., with the game shown on tape delay on ESPNU at 10:00 p.m.
