Box Score
Despite two goals apiece from sophomores
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson),
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) and freshman
Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, CA/Dublin), the UDM women's lacrosse team saw its tournament championship hopes come to an end with an 18-6 loss to Longwood on Saturday.
“I thought the team played their hardest and really left everything out on the field,” said head coach
Mary Ann Meltzer. “Two games in two days with no subs in this heat was hard, but they didn't give up.”
Playing shorthanded without the use of any subs, the Titans hung around with the tournament's No. 1 seed in the first half, tying the score at one on a goal from Mahorn five minutes into the contest. Detroit would fall behind by two, but Mahorn's second goal would get UDM within one, 3-2, with 16:24 left.
Three straight Longwood (9-8) goals would see the deficit rise to four, 6-2, but Hamze would cut it in half with an unassisted score at 8:49. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Titans were that close as the home team struck for nine straight goals to take a 15-3 lead into the second half.
Detroit showed no quit though as Boissonneault came up with back-to-back markers to get the Titans within 10, 15-5, but the red, white and blue could not get any closer. Hamze rounded out the scoring by finding the back of the net with seven seconds left in the game.
Freshman
Marybeth Flanagan (Lansing, MI/Waverly) saw plenty of shots on the day, coming away with a season-high 19 saves, as the Lancers outshot Detroit 50-16.
“Marybeth really played out of her mind,” said Meltzer. “We tried to keep people fresh by keeping them back at times, but we didn't do a good job of keeping the ball today.”
The loss drops Detroit to 7-12 on the year and they will now vie for third place in the National Lacrosse Conference tournament tomorrow against the non-advancer of the Jacksonville-Davidson contest. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m., and you can follow the action with live stats by
