Detroit Women’s Soccer Wins 1-0 In Overtime

Box Score

Freshman Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) scored the game-winner at 4:02 in overtime giving the Titans a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.

The Titans (3-2-1) went into the extra frame tied 0-0 with Eastern Michigan (2-2-1) for the third straight year, and McCollum's shot from just outside the 18-yard box powered its way into the back of the net for the victory. Sophomore Mary Leone (St. Claire Shores, MI/Lakeview) stole a pass from the Eagles and sent the ball to McCollum who fired the shot out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

"When you look at our overall game with regards to how many chances we had today, and this being the third game in five days, I was a little worried about our energy level coming back from California, but the girls really stepped up today," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "I felt we were the better squad today and we deserved the result we received."

Detroit held a 20-5 overall shooting advantage, including 10 shots on goal to Eastern Michigan's two. Freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made two saves for her second shutout.

“I told the girls before overtime just keep working and Abby turned and hit a great shot upper 90 and it went in for us,” continued Lupenec. “It's a good win for everyone. Nora got a shutout and the back line did a tremendous job containing Eastern. We didn't give them that many opportunities, but when we did, we held them.”

The Titans' next game will be its fourth-straight road contest, and sixth out of their last seven away from Titan Field, as Detroit plays this Sunday against Oakland.  The game will be played in Pontiac at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas at 5:00 p.m.
