Detroit will look to end a two-game slide against the Vikings, who are 6-1 at home on the season. It is a pivotal early season match-up in conference play with Detroit standing at 8-8, 2-3 in the league, while Cleveland State is 10-7, 3-3 in the HL.
The Titans nearly came away with a win on the road last week coming back from 10 points down in the second half to take a lead before falling to Wright State, 63-62.
DETROIT VS. CLEVELAND STATE
Detroit leads the all-time series, 31-11, thanks in large part to taking 18 of the first 20 career meetings against the Vikings.
Cleveland State has won three of the last four meetings, but the teams split last season as Detroit won on its home court, 62-54, before CSU claimed a 70-60 win in overtime in Cleveland.
UDM is 12-8 on the road in the series, but has dropped the last three at the Wolstein Center.
ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State started the year at 5-0 and comes into the game at 10-7, 3-3 in conference play. The Vikings are 6-1 at home with their only setback to ranked Green Bay, 63-55.
Shawnita Garland leads the team in scoring at 13.7 ppg, 10th in the HL, while also ranking first in steals (3.1) and fourth in assists (3.8). PAIR OF TITANS IN THE TOP 100 IN TWO NCAA STATISTICS
The NCAA released its latest nationally statistics and two Titans find themselves in the top 100 in the nation in two categories.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok is tied for 44th in the country in rebounding at 9.4 per game, while junior
Lauren Allen is 98th in Division I with a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio.
As a team, Detroit continues to take care of the ball turning it over just 15.9 times a game, 56th in the nation. It is also one of the least penalized teams committing an average of 16.0 fouls per game, which ranks 85th.
SOME GOOD NUMBERS VS. CSU
A few of the Titans have good career numbers against the Vikings.
In four career games, junior
Jalesa Jones is posting 10.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game, which includes a 17-point, six-assist game at home last season and a 14-point, eight-rebound, five-steal performance as a freshman at the Wolstein Center in 2009.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok averaged 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two games last year, while sophomore
Demeisha Fambro tallied double digits in both games with 12 on the road and 10 at home.
CHERR I “THREE”
Sophomore
Cherridy Thornton connected on a career-best five 3-pointers against Valparaiso on Jan. 6, and is 16-for-32 (50%) from behind the arc in her last five games.
In fact on the season, more than half of her field goals (43) have been from behind the arc (27) as well as 13 of her last 15 field goals in her last three games.
I LOVE CALIHAN BUT....
Sophomore
Dominique Dixon leads the Titans in scoring, but she has actually performed better on the road to this point then in the friendly confines of Calihan Hall.
In her nine road games (she missed the Titans' contest at IPFW) the guard has posted six games in double figures, including two 30-point contests as well as a 20-point game. She is averaging 14.8 ppg, on 46% shooting (49-of-105) and 46% from long distance (18-of-39).
In her six home games, Dixon is averaging 7.0 ppg., shooting 28% from the field (15-of-53) and just 20% from three (2-of-10). She also has just one double-digit scoring effort at home with 15 points in Detroit's last home game against Butler.
It should be noted that Dixon might be getting more comfortable at home since she is tallying 10.6 ppg., in her last three home games, compared to just 3.3 ppg., in her first three.
DETROIT TAKING IT AWAY
Detroit has forced at least 15 turnovers in 11 of its 16 games on the year, including six contests with 20+ turnovers. Three of the 20+ turnover games have come against conference foes including a season-best 25 forced miscues in its last game against Wright State.
Below is a look at some of the Titans' big defensive days and the points they have scored off turnovers.
- 25 forced turnovers at Wright State (28 points off turnovers)
- 23 forced turnovers vs. Butler (14 points off turnovers)
- 19 forced turnovers vs. Valparaiso (29 points off turnovers)
- 20 forced turnovers at Milwaukee (24 points off turnovers)
- 22 forced turnovers vs. Marygrove (29 points off turnovers
- 22 forced turnovers vs. Ball State (30 points off turnovers)
On the year, the Titans have caused 275 turnovers, an average of 17.1 per game.
MORE ON DETROIT'S DEFENSE
With the increase in forced turnovers, Detroit has also been coming away with a plethora of steals lately as it has tallied 10+ steals in six-straight games after not reaching that mark in its first 10 games.
UDM had a season-high 15 steals against Marygrove, the most Detroit has come away with since a 16-steal effort at Wright State on Jan. 31, 2009. During this span, the red, white and blue has collected 14 steals at Wright State, 12 at No. 21 Green bay, 11 at Milwaukee and 10 against Valparaiso and Butler.
In its last six games, Detroit has recorded 72 steals, an average of 12.0 per game. Four Titans have posted 2.0 steals a game led by
Yar Shayok at 2.2, while
Lauren Allen,
Jalesa Jones and
Britney Murphy have tallied 2.0 per game.
