Men's Fencing Takes Turn at Notre Dame

(Round-by-Round Team Results)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The men's fencing team participated in seven head-to-head match-ups today at the Duals at Notre Dame to complete the weekend tournament in South Bend, IN.

The men's foil team once again led the Titans as they posted a team-high 31 wins on the day. That also included head-to-head victories against Lawrence (7-2), Florida (5-4), and Cleveland State (5-4).

However, the highest individual win total from Detroit today came from the men's sabre team as senior Tom Lorenzo (Avon, OH/St. Ignatius) totaled 14 of his sabre team's 23 wins.

Freshman Yaroslav Ivanov (Louisville, KY/Ballard) posted a 9-4 individual record on the men's foil squad while junior Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Independent Studies) went 11-7 and senior Brad Coon (Jenison, MI/Hudsonville) was 10-6 in contributing to the foil team's success.

As an overall team, the men's foil, epee, and sabre teams recorded wins over Lawrence (16-11), Florida (15-12), and competed tough against Notre Dame (4-23), Northwestern (8-19), Cleveland State (7-20), Swarthmore (10-17), and Air Force (7-20).

As the day was drawing to an end, the Titans were preparing for their final match against the Air Force. Detroit started to generate momentum and put together its toughest fight of the day against a formidable Air Force squad.

“The seven wins we took against Air Force were all quality, hard-fought wins,” stated head coach Todd Dressell.

“Hopefully that last match-up against Air Force will give us the right frame of mind as we head to a competitive field at Northwestern next week,” added Dressell.

The men's and women's teams will both be in action next weekend as they will compete on Sunday at the Northwestern Megameet.
