DETROIT -- Sophomore
Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) was on fire in the second half hitting five 3-pointers to ignite a Titan rally, but it was not enough as the Titans dropped a 61-51 decision to Michigan on Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.
Shearer came into the game 0-of-14 from three and missed her first three of the game before connecting on her five triples in the second half ending with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-10 from the field, all 3-pointers.
Freshman
Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) had 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The 15 points also kept her streak alive of scoring in double digits in every game this season, while she also posted her fourth double-double of the year.
The Titans (1-8) were down by 17, 44-27, with 12:51 left when they staged a comeback, cutting the deficit all the way down to just two.
Shearer started the rally with back-to-back 3-pointers and that was followed by layups from junior
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) and sophomore
Megan Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell). The defense was doing its part holding Michigan (9-1) scoreless on four-straight possessions as the Titans were down by seven, 44-37.
After a Michigan basket, freshman
Audrey Matteson (Monticello, IN/Twin Lakes) found a wide open Shearer and her third trey cut it to six, 46-40.
The Wolverines recovered from that to hit a three of their own to run the lead back to nine, 49-40, but the Titans came right back with a 10-3 spurt as Brown got inside for a bucket and Shearer knocked in her fourth trifetca of the game to make it a 49-45 contest. U-M eventually took a 52-45 lead, but Shayok's jumper and another 3-pointer from Shearer had the Titans within two, 52-50, with 3:15 left.
That was as close as Detroit could get as the Titans were outscored 9-1 down the stretch.
Shayok ended the game with four points, four boards, two blocks and two steals, while senior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) and junior
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) each netted five apiece.
Detroit connected on a season-best eight 3-pointers and outrebounded an opponent for the seventh time this season with a 39-33 advantage.
The Titans started quick out of the gate with a 3-pointer by Fambro and a basket by Allen to take a 5-0 lead. A Brown jumper would give the Titans another five-point advantage, 7-2, just a little more than two minutes into the contest.
Michigan then went on a 15-0 run to jump put in front, 17-7. The Wolverines stayed hot from the outside and opened a 19-point lead, 31-12, when the Titans answered by outscoring U-M, 9-3 in the final 3:18 of the first half.
Back-to-back baskets from Brown got UDM going and after a trey from Michigan, Allen nailed her second trey of the game and Jones turned a Titan steal into two on the other end to send the red, white and blue into the half down by 13, 34-21.
Detroit will have some time off as finals week has arrived, with its next game not until Dec. 18, when UDM hosts IPFW at 1:00 p.m.
