DETROIT - The men's and women's fencing teams hosted Wayne State and Michigan State in the annual UDM Invitational held at Calihan Hall on Sunday as Detroit's men's foil team posted a pair of victories on the day.
Junior
Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Ind. Studies) registered a 6-0 mark for the Titans as the men's foil team defeated Michigan State, 7-2, and Wayne State, 5-4. Also on the men's foil squad, freshman
Yaroslav Ivanov (Louisville, KY/Ballard) totaled five of the team's wins, including a 3-0 record against the Spartans, compared to just one loss on the day.
As a team, the men's squad fell 16-11 to Wayne State and dropped a close 14-13 decision to Michigan State.
Other men's highlights included senior
Tim Nelson with a 4-2 mark in men's epee, while senior
Tom Lorenzo (Avon, OH/St. Ignatius) had a 4-2 record on the day in the sabre. Freshman
Logan Clements (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) also tallied three wins for the Titans in men's sabre.
On the women's side,
Eva Berndt (Fremont, MI/Providence Christian), on the sabre squad, and
Sarah Armitage (Canton, MI/Plymouth), from the foil squad, each posted a pair of wins for the young women's team.
Overall, the women fell 23-4 to MSU and 27-0 to Wayne State.
“Our overall results were a little disappointing, but some of our fencers did a great job today and we continue to gain that needed experience,” stated Detroit's fencing head coach
Todd Dressell.
The next team event for the Titans will be the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, hosted by Notre Dame on March 5-6.
