CHICAGO -- Sophomore Cherridy Thornton's 20 points led four Titans in double figures as Detroit went into Loyola's Alumni Gym and came away with a 71-62 victory over the Ramblers on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved UDM to 12-15 on the year and 6-10 in the Horizon League, where Detroit now sits in seventh place. With Valparaiso losing to Milwaukee earlier in the day, Detroit is now assured of a home game in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament.

Thornton tied her career high for the third time this season with 20 markers, while pulling down seven rebounds. Sophomore Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) added 18 points and tied her high watermark with eight boards, while sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) posted her 10th double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) added 11 points and five caroms and sophomore Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) scored eight off the bench.

The game was tied at 41-all with 13:41 left in the game when Detroit went on a 7-0 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. Murphy started it with an old fashioned three-point play after getting fouled going to the basket. Fambro and junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) then added back-to-back baskets to put the Titans ahead, 48-41, at the 10:28 mark.

Loyola (11-16, 5-11 HL) was able to cut the Titan lead to three on two occasions, the latest at 53-50 with 6:31 left, but Thornton then connected on two-straight 3-pointers to take a 59-50 advantage. Detroit continued to maintain its lead and would even extend it to double digits with under two minutes to go, with its largest lead of 12, 69-57, before the horn sounded on the nine-point victory.

Detroit committed only eight turnovers in the game, a new season low, while forcing 15 Loyola miscues. UDM would use that to its advantage outscoring the Ramblers, 12-6, in second-chance points and 15-13 in points off turnovers. After seeing LU shoot over 50 percent in the first half (12-of-23), the Titans held the Ramblers to just 33 percent (9-of-27) in the second stanza.

Detroit and Loyola came out running to start the contest. Loyola hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the game and led for much of the first half. A triple by Fambro briefly put UDM in front, 15-14, but the Ramblers regained the advantage and went up by as many as five, 26-21.

Dixon then scored five straight to tie it at 26 and both teams traded threes to end the first half, with Thornton nailing one at the buzzer

The Titans will return home for a pair of conference games to end the regular season, starting with Milwaukee on Thursday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., at Calihan Hall.
