Detroit Mercy (4-17, 2-10 HL) pulled in a season-best 21offensive rebounds, which led to a 13-5 second-chance points advantage, but the Titans couldn't recover from a slow first-half start, especially in the first quarter, which proved too difficult to overcome.
Youngstown State (15-7, 8-4 HL) jumped out to an 11-2 lead to open the game and went on to shoot a blistering 9-for-13 (69.2%) and 3-for-5 (60.0%) from 3-point range to take a 23-8 lead after the first quarter.
After only shooting 4-for-13 (30.8%) in the first frame, UDM's offense came alive in the second quarter, scoring 18 points on 7-for-15 (46.7%) shooting and 2-for-3 (66.7%) from long range. However, YSU's hot shooting continued, scoring 22 points, and went on to shoot 16-for-25 (64.5%) and 8-for-13 (61.5%) overall to take a commanding 45-26 lead at the half and never looked back.
In the second half, the Titans were outscored by only three points, 16-13, in the third quarter, but still trailed by 22 points, 61-39, going into the fourth.
In the final frame, UDM continued to fight, outscoring YSU 14-8, holding the Penguins scoreless for the final 2:53 of the game.
