Box Score
CINCINNATI – The women's lacrosse team nearly earned their first win of the season on Friday afternoon, but in the end it was Cincinnati that came away with a 14-12 victory.
Erin Campbell (Orangeville, ON, Orangeville District Secondary) led Detroit offensively with four goals and two assists.
The combination of Katie Liberatore and Laura Simanski proved to be the difference in the game between Detroit and Cincinnati on Friday. Liberatore scored six goals, while Simanski added four to lead the Bearcats to their second win of the season. Marissa Pierson and Kati Kiriazoglou rounded out the scoring for Cincinnati.
Campbell's four goal performance was a highlight for Detroit. Other Titans getting the job done offensively included
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN, Totino-Grace) and
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON, Donald A. Wilson Secondary), who each was able to record a hat trick against the Bearcats.
Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, MD, Northeast) and
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON, Anderson CVI) also got on the scoreboard for Detroit.
The Titans found themselves in a hole early as the Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Detroit would battle back and eventually take an 8-7 lead into halftime. UDM scored four straight goals near the end of the first half to take their first lead of the game (7-6). A goal from Eidem with one second on the game clock gave Detroit momentum going into halftime.
That momentum did not carry over to the start of the second half as Cincinnati once again jumped on Detroit to regain the lead. The Bearcats scored four in a row to take an 11-8 edge, but the Titans would once again comeback with three straight goals of their own to tie the game at 11-11.
Simanski broke the tie with a free position goal with just over nine minutes to play on the game clock, and Liberatore pushed the advantage to 13-11 with 4:55 remaining.
Detroit pulled within one after a score from Boissonneault, but Simanski put the nail in the coffin for Cincinnati with her fourth goal of the game coming with less than a minute to play.
Marybeth Flanagan (Lansing, MI, Waverly) was the goalkeeper for Detroit. Flanagan made nine saves in 60 minutes of action. The Titans will return to action on Sunday with a matchup against the Duquesne Dukes. First draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
