Port St. Lucie, Fla. – The Detroit men's golf team opened the spring season with a trophy as the defending Horizon League champions never gave up its first-round lead in winning the PGA Village Invitational at the Wanamaker Golf Club on Saturday.
“ I think the guys did a good job considering that we knew Lenny (
Brendan Leonard) was injured right away and we had no room for error with just four players left the whole way,” said head coach Mark Engel. “All in all, it wasn't our best golf, but it's always good to get a win, especially on a course as tough as the Wannamaker."
Detroit followed its 315 on day one with a 311 on Saturday to finish with a 626, seven strokes ahead of the University of Toronto (633).
Senior
Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek) took runner-up honors in the event posting a two-over 146 (73-73), just one stroke behind Monmouth's Ian Trimble.
"Jeff really put us on his back and carried the team in this tournament. He absolutely hit the ball well enough to win it individually and you know the putting will come,” added Engel, who saw the Titans win their 21st tournament under his direction.
Junior
Mark Hicks (Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON/Niagara) improved his round one total by seven strokes, ending with a 157 (82-75), while sophomore
Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) carded a 160 (78-82).
The Titans will be back in action on Mar. 28, when UDM plays in the Butler Invitational, held at the Prestwick Golf Course in Avon, IN.
