COLUMBUS – Day one of the NCAA Fencing Championships took place at the French Field House and St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio Thursday and junior Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Ind. Studies) ended the first four rounds of competition in 18th position in the men's foil standings.
Purdy-Sachs, competing in his first ever NCAA Fencing Championship, took home five wins on the day through the first four rounds. His first NCAA Championship victory was a 5-2 win over Samuel Hardwicke-Brown of Ohio State and came in an opening round that featured six bouts.
His second win came in round two as he upended Joseph Alter of North Carolina by a 5-3 margin.
In the third round, the Titan junior took victories in two of his three bouts. The first was a two-touch victory over Tommaso DiRobilant of Harvard and the second defeat was a close 5-4 score over Eli Schenkel of St. John's.
In the fourth and final round of the first day, Purdy-Sachs collected his fifth win in the opening bout. He displayed a dominating performance in a 5-1 tilt over Reggie Bentley who comes from a highly respected Notre Dame fencing program. Bentley sits in fourth place after the first day of competition.
“In tournaments like this, there are ups and downs and you just have to stay mentally tough. Everyone here is a strong opponent and Mike got a few wins today. With five wins on the day, you take that and move ahead and prepare for tomorrow,” said Titan fencing head coach Todd Dressell.
Day two and the completion of rounds 5-7 will continue Friday at 9:30 a.m. For complete information on the NCAA Fencing Championships, CLICK HERE to visit the NCAA fencing website.
