COLUMBUS – The NCAA Fencing Championships wrapped up Friday in Columbus, Ohio as Detroit Titan junior
Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Ind. Studies) completed his first ever NCAA tournament and finished in a tie for 20th place in men's foil.
“Mike had a great season and a good tournament. He is really anxious and excited to get back to work for next season because he expects to get back here,” stated Titan fencing head coach
Todd Dressell.
The top 12 fencers from each weapon in the tournament earn All-America status and in the final results, three fencers tied for 12th place with 10 wins each. Purdy-Sachs finished with eight wins over the two-day tournament.
Purdy-Sachs totaled three victories in Friday's finale. One was a 5-4 decision over Shiv Kachru of Yale, while another was a four-touch victory over Julian Cardillo of Brandeis 5-1, and the last came in a 5-2 defeat over Philip Jamesson of NYU.
“I felt that I fenced well and I had a great time. The Ohio State guys that I traveled around the room with were great and I had a lot of support from the OSU fans. I am confident if I work hard that I will make it back and into the Top-8 next season,” said Purdy-Sachs.
“If you look at the bouts, he lost a few close ones that he believes he can win next year and get in that All-American category,” added Dressell.
The end of the NCAA Tournament officially brings the 2010-11 fencing season to a close as the Titans competed in six regular season meets. All but eight Titans wrapped up the season at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships on March 5. Those eight continued this year's campaign at the NCAA Regional Qualifier March 12 and Purdy-Sachs's results from Friday complete the season.
