LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Titans were defeated by the Liberty Flames on Friday afternoon by the final score of 15-10.
Jaimee Stoner (Valencia, CA, Hart),
Morgan Lear (San Ramon, CA, Dougherty Valley), and
Megan Callahan (Lake Worth, FL, Park Vista Community) all recorded their first goal of the season for Detroit.
UDM (1-5, 0-1 NLC) had a balanced scoring attack against the Flames (3-3, 1-0 NLC).
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN, Totino-Grace) and
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON, Donald A. Wilson Secondary) led the team in scoring with two goals each. Liberty had three players' record hat tricks on Friday. Karis Walborn, Nina Dunay, and Audra Menez scored nine of the team's 15 goals against Detroit.
The Titans got off to a fast start by taking a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The Flames responded by scoring the next six goals of the contest to take the four goal advantage. Five different players scored a goal during that stretch. Jen Moyer highlighted the series with two goals for Liberty.
Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, MD, Northeast) snapped the streak with a goal off an assist from
Erin Campbell (Orangeville, ON, Orangeville District Secondary), but the Liberty offense once again came back with a flurry of goals. The Flames rattled off the next three scores of the game taking a commanding 9-3 lead into halftime.
The second half of action was a back and forth battle.
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON, Anderson CVI) scored 31 seconds into the period, but Dunay would answer nearly a minute later to keep the lead at six. Boissonneault came up with her second goal of the game, but once again Liberty was right there to fight back with a goal to keep their distance.
The next three goals from Detroit came from some new faces.
Jaimee Stoner beat the keeper at the 25:01 mark and freshman
Morgan Lear scored the next Titan goal on a free position attempt. “I was awarded the free position attempt after getting checked while I was driving at the goalkeeper,” Lear explained. “I took a low shot that went between the goalkeepers legs.”
Lear has been limited in action due to an injury, but she should be able to contribute for the rest of the season. “I felt good today, so I think my knee is doing fine,” Lear added. “When I first came back I had to monitor my minutes, but now I am looking forward to playing in future games.”
Both goalkeepers had good games for their respective teams.
Marybeth Flanagan (Lansing, MI, Waverly) made eight saves for the Titans, while Kristen Masullo came up with 13 stops for Liberty.
Detroit will finish the weekend with a matchup against Longwood on Sunday. First draw is scheduled for noon.
