Postgame Interview On Titan YouTube Channel
DETROIT -- Junior
Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) scored a career-high 16 points and Detroit had a second-half lead, but a Green Bay run stopped Detroit's chance at an upset as UDM was downed, 68-48, on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
“I thought our girls played hard and they really came out fired up,” said head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “We were with them for about 6-7 minutes into the second half, but all of a sudden we struggled on the offensive end and they hit some big shots on their end and it just got away from us.”
It was the regular season finale for both teams as Detroit fell to 12-17 and 6-12 in the conference, where the Titans already know that they will be the seventh seed and host an opening round game on Monday. No. 15/12 Green Bay finished the year at 29-1 and 18-0 in the Horizon League and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming HL tournament.
Murphy was 5-of-10 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line, while adding four rebounds. Junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) and sophomores
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) and
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) each had six apiece, while sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) posted five points and nine rebounds.
“She (Britney) does have the ability to score and we need her to do so,” said Rademacher. “She does have the green light to go ahead and pull up. She is probably our best mid-range type jump shooter and that is what a lot of teams are giving us a lot of late.”
The game featured 10 lead changes and five ties, as the Titans once again gave the nationally-ranked Phoenix a big scare.
Green Bay had a five-point lead, 35-30, just two minutes into the second stanza when Murphy caught fire netting 10-straight for Detroit. She nailed a jumper and a minute later, was fouled attempting a 3-pointer and calmly hit all three from the charity stripe to even the score at 35.
After a Green Bay basket, Murphy was fouled and again went to the line connecting on both of her shots to knot it at 37 and after the Titans held the Phoenix scoreless on their possession, Murphy drained a triple to put the red, white and blue in front, 40-37, with 14:48 left in the game.
Green Bay then broke the game open with a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 56-42 advantage as the Phoenix never allowed UDM to get back within single digits.
The game was tight throughout the first half with the lead changing eight times, but Green Bay did open up an eight-point lead, 28-20, late in the period. Detroit came right back scoring eight of the final 10 points in the stanza, with Murphy netting back-to-back baskets in the final 40 seconds to get Detroit within two at the break, 30-28.
Detroit forced 15 Green Bay turnovers and held the Phoenix to just 16 for its first 42 from the field (38%) before Green Bay connected on 8-of-14 down the stretch to push its percentage to 42.9 for the game.
