Dixon, Shayok Earn Postseason Honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomores Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) and Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) were honored for their play during the regular season as the Horizon League announced its postseason awards Sunday afternoon.

Dixon was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer squad, while Shayok was selected to the All-Defensive Team.

Dixon leads the Titans in scoring and is 16th in the Horizon League at 12.4 points per game, but in conference play, her offense swells to 15.4 points, eighth among her peers. After a slow start, Dixon really came on in December as she led Detroit with 20 points in a dominating 67-48 victory at Michigan. That was the first of four games with 20+ points as she would tally back-to-back 30-point outings with 31 at Green Bay and a career-high 32 at Milwaukee. She later added 27 at home against Loyola. She was in double figures 16 times on the season, including 13 in HL action, while also finishing second on the team with 3.8 rebounds per game.

Shayok takes home a conference award for the second-straight season as she was named the Horizon League's Newcomer of the Year in 2010. Shayok was a force inside all year for Detroit posting 10 doubles-doubles and leading the league in rebounding at 10.5 per night, including a share of the conference's top spot with 7.1 defensive rebounds per game. She also finished tied for third in the HL in blocks (1.3) and even led UDM with 44 steals on the year. Her play was one of the main reasons why Detroit finished among the league leaders in points allowed. She becomes the first Titan since Melissa Harakas in 2005 to be voted to the league's All-Defensive team.

Dixon and Shayok will now look to help lead the red, white and blue to a conference championship as Detroit opens the HL tournament on Monday when the seventh-seeded Titans host the 10th-seeded Valparaiso. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., at Calihan Hall.
