The Detroit-Marist match-up will be the regular season finale for both squads. It will also feature two of the hottest teams in the MAAC as the Titans have won three in a row and 4 of their last 5, while the Red Foxes are on a six-game winning streak, which includes three overtime victories.
The game also has major playoff implications for both teams. A win by Detroit (5-8, 4-1 MAAC) and it will clinch the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and at least a share of the MAAC regular season championship. A loss by the Titans and they will still have a shot at a share of the regular season championship provided that Siena losses to VMI.
For Marist (7-6, 3-2 MAAC), a win and the Red Foxes will clinch a spot in the MAAC tournament and have as high as a No. 2 seed, but a loss could see them slide to fifth place and out of the league tournament all together.
The Titans enjoyed a bye last week as they spent the Easter Holiday with family, but prior to that, UDM won an exciting overtime thriller over Canisius, 10-9, to remain in first place in the MAAC. Detroit still leads the nation in caused turnovers per game (12.15), while a pair of Titans are in the top 10 in that category as sophomore
Jordan Houtby is second (3.54) and sophomore
Jamie Hebden is ninth (2.31). Houtby also ranks 10th in ground balls at 6.46 per game.
Offensively, the Titans have reached double digits in goals in three straight games and five of the last six, while posting at least eight goals in nine straight contests. Freshman
Shayne Adams tops the team and the MAAC with 31 goals and is also eighth in the nation in total goals and goals per game (2.38). Junior
Scott Harris is second on the team in points (33) and leads Detroit and is tied for fifth in the league with 17 assists, while freshman
Alex Maini is second on UDM with 17 markers.
Marist leads the MAAC in defense allowing just 8.82 goals per game. The Red Foxes have three 20-goal scorers on their team, led by Jack Doherty's 29 goals. Connor Rice leads the team in scoring with 45 points on 21 goals and a MAAC-best 24 assists, while senior Corey Zindel is right behind him with 41 points and 20 goals.
Detroit MAAC Playoff Scenarios
The Titans have already clinched a spot in the MAAC tournament and can finish as either the No. 1 seed or the No. 3 seed.
A win over Marist gives the Titans the No. 1 seed, while a loss to Marist drops the Titans to No. 3 and sets up a rematch with the Red Foxes in the first round next Friday.
A three-way tie at 4-2 between Detroit, Marist and Siena would have Siena earn No. 1, and Marist/Detroit would be No. 2/3 due to tiebreakers. Since all three teams would be 1-1 against each other, the next tiebreak is record against remaining teams and that would be Jacksonville at 3-3 and whoever might end up at 3-3 with Canisius and Manhattan. Siena would be 2-0 against any combination therefore giving them No. 1 and that would settle the three-way tie and make it a tie between Detroit and Marist, with the outcome deciding the tiebreak.
