Women's Lacrosse Edged in Season Finale

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The women's lacrosse team had the lead after the first 30 minutes of play, but a hot second half start by Presbyterian proved to be the difference as Detroit lost by the final score of 18-17 on Saturday afternoon at the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament.

Emily Boissonneault capped off a brilliant junior season with a game-high seven goals for Detroit. She also caused three turnovers and came up with two ground balls.

Zaynib Hamze also played very well for the Titans. Hamze scored a hat trick and also made two assists, ending the game with five points. Anna Eidem, Corina Mahorn, and Olivia Mendoza all chipped in with two goals each while freshman Jenna Alberts rounded out the scoring for Detroit with her first career goal.

Lauren Lefeber came off the bench for Presbyterian to score a team-high four goals for the Blue Hose. Presbyterian had a balance scoring attack as four players ended the game with two goals each. Catherine Ellis was a key contributor to the Presbyterian offense. She ended the game with three goals.

Detroit held a 9-5 advantage at the half. Mahorn led the charge early scoring two of the team's first three goals against the Blue Hose. After a goal from Katie Prisco, it was Emily Boissonneault responding for Detroit pushing the UDM lead to 4-1.

Presbyterian got rolling midway through the half with three unanswered goals, but Detroit fought back with three goals of their own making the score 7-4. Zaynib Hamze came up with two of the three goals, both of which were unassisted.

The Titans scored the final two goals of the half. Boissonneault finalized her first half hat trick with just over two minutes remaining, and Mendoza found the back of the net with less than a minute to play.

The game changed when the whistle blew for the second half of play. Presbyterian dominated the first 10 minutes of action by scoring nine straight goals to grab a 14-9 lead. Boissonneault stopped the streak with a goal off a Hamze assist. The Titans scored two of the next three goals as Alberts and Eidem beat the keeper making the score 15-12.

Presbyterian was able to make one more run pushing the lead to 18-12. The Titans showed heart by making a comeback late in the half, but they came up one goal short as Presbyterian won the consolation game by the final score of 18-17. Boissonneault scored three of the team's final five goals with five minutes remaining.

The Titans end the 2011 season with an overall record of 3-15. They were forced to use three different goalkeepers during the season due to injuries, but they may consider making a permanent change as Alycsa Valentine came up with another terrific performance. Valentine made 11 first half saves to help Detroit open up a lead. She ended the game with a game-high 17.
