DETROIT -- It might have been close to record-breaking temperatures outside, but Titan support was the only thing that was hot as the 2011 CAL Club Golf Outing was held on June 8 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.
With the temperature reaching 96, Detroit athletic donors came out for a day of celebration and golf as Titan spirit was high for the ending of another great year, as well as the excitement for what the future holds for the University.
“It was terrific to see so many of our alums and boosters at the outing. Despite the heat, you couldn't hold back the enthusiasm our supporters have for Titan athletics,” said Athletic Director Keri Gaither. “We had a number of former student-athletes come back to take part in the event as well as two great former Titan coaches in
Bob Miller and
Perry Watson. Overall, it was just a great day to be a Titan.”
The day included some great golf with the field split up into foursomes comprised of current CAL Club members and prospects along with Titan athletic staff and coaches, all of whom hit the links for an 18-hole scramble.
After the golf was over, a catered meal and cocktails were served as a short program began with Gaither speaking as well as men's basketball head coach
Ray McCallum and women's head coach Autumn Rademacher. Both McCallum and Rademacher are excited about the 2011-12 season, especially since both squads return all of their top talent from last year.
The winning team was the foursome of Chris Coulter, Scott Courtney, Glenn Knott and Brad Shepler, who shot a score of 11-under par.
There was a tie for second at 9-under par, but due to a scorecard playoff, second place was awarded to the DiMambro family of father Joe and his sons Tony, Steve and Mark.
Third place was the foursome of coach Perry Watson, Mike Bink, Kevin Byrnes and Pat Miller with honorary team captain coach Bob Miller leading the way.
Other contest winners included the two “Closest to the Pin” winners in Chris Coulter and Bill Larkin, while the “Longest Drive” was posted by Gaither and Shepler.
The Titan Athletic Department would like to extend a big round of applause and gratitude to all the golfers who came out for the event as well as all of those who help make Titan athletics a success. We would live to see all of you at the next event – The Titan Club Golf Outing – which is scheduled for Aug. 11. More information on that event will be released in the near future.
