ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) ended the season opener with a career-best 215 to lead the Detroit Titans men's golf team to a ninth-place finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, held at the U-M Golf Course.

The Titans carded an 880 (294, 291, 295) in the three-round event. California won the tournament with an 839, while Missouri's Jace Long was the medalist with a 206 (67, 73, 66) score.

“I was really pleased with the way the guys performed,” said head coach Mark Engel. “The course is tough. They set it up like they were getting ready for an NCAA Regional which they are going to have in the spring.”

Reyers ended the event with a three-over 74 on the final 18. He started his record breaking event with a career-low 68 in round one. He tallied three more birdies in the final round to push his total to 12 in the 54-hole event.

“Simon is realizing that he has a tremendous amount of ability,” said Engel. “He can help us a ton.”

Senior Mark Hicks (Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON/Niagara) posted the best score for the Titans in round three shooting a two-over 73. Hicks had 14 pars and a birdie on the final 18 to finish in 53rd place with a 229 (76, 80, 73).

Freshman Lucas Kim (Toronto, ON/Silverthorn) ended his college debut tying for 31st place with a 221 (72, 72, 77), while sophomore Brendan Leonard (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict) shared 45th with a 226 (78, 74, 74). Leonard had four birdies in the final 18 for his second-straight three-over 74 card.

Freshman Michael Nedoszytko (Scarborough, ON/McNeil) clearly shook off the nerves of his first collegiate action finishing with a 74 of his own on the day. Overall, the rookie was 52nd with a 228 (82, 72, 74).

“Overall, we kept getting better and better as the week went on and the guys picked each other up,” added Engel.

UDM returns to action next week when it heads to Bowling Green, OH, and the Stone Ridge Golf Club to play in the John Piper Intercollegiate.
