DETROIT (10/29/2012) -- Four Titans were in double figures and Detroit had a pair of players post double-doubles as the Titan women's basketball team took care of Lawrence Tech, 97-33, in its first exhibition game of the season on Monday night.
Detroit improved to 5-1 in exhibition games under head coach Autumn Rademacher with this being the fifth-straight win.
Sophomore
Shareta Brown had a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, while senior
Yar Shayok ended with 18 points and 13 boards. Freshman
Destiny Lavita-Stephens came off the bench to score 14 and sophomore
Audrey Matteson added 13 markers, six assists and three steals.
UDM shot nearly 50% from the field hitting 41-of-84 (48.8%), while outrebounding the first-year Lawrence Tech program, 59-21.
The Titans got ahead early scoring the game's first eight points. Junior
Megan Hatter began the offensive night with a trey and that was followed by a bucket from Brown and a 3-point play from Shayok.
UDM added to its lead as Matteson connected on a pair of early 3-pointers and Lavita-Stephens came off the bench for seven quick points to push the red, white and blue's lead to 21, 27-6, just eight minutes into the contest.
The Titans continued their offensive barrage as they followed a 17-0 run with a 14-4 spurt to break the game wide open, 45-12, with under four minutes to play in the first period. Matteson was key during both runs as she connected with two more triples during those stretches and Lavita-Stephens ran her first-half effort in scoring to double digits.
Detroit held a 58-16 advantage at the half, shooting 49% from the field (23-of-47), while outrebounding Lawrence Tech, 34-8. At the half, UDM also honored one of its biggest fans and longtime donor Barb Wolak for her continued support of Titan athletics and the women's basketball program.
It was more of the same in the second stanza as Detroit saw its lead rise to 60, 79-19, on the strength of a 21-3 spurt in the first nine minutes of action.
Detroit then raced its lead to a game-high 67 points on two occasions, 90-23 and 92-25, before finishing the contest with a 64-point victory.
Hatter ended the game with eight points and four rebounds, while senior
Demeisha Fambro added eight points and five boards. Freshman
Rosanna Reynolds tallied a game-high five steals to go with six assists, four points, and three boards.
Freshman
Tayelor McCalister grabbed six rebounds and scored six points with three assists and sophomore
Brie Wilcox added six caroms of her own.
Detroit held LT to 32.6% shooting and forced 28 turnovers with 15 steals.
Detroit will have one more exhibition game before the regular season as UDM hosts Marygrove next Monday, Nov. 5, on Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall. The game is part of a community service weekend that will see both teams clean up the mile stretch between both campuses on McNichols Road on Sunday afternoon.
