Detroit opened the tournament by battling No. 6/7 Penn State all the way until the very end as the Lady Lions bested the red, white and blue, 80-72. Four Titans scored in double figures led by a career-high 20 points from
Audrey Matteson and a double-double from sophomore
Shareta Brown with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
UDM led in the first half by as many as five, 32-27, but Penn State would come back to take a 14-point lead at one time in the second period. Detroit cut that deficit to six on a few occasions, but PSU was able to pull out the win.
South Alabama was 4-0, but fell to host Cal State Northridge, 47-40, in the second game of the tournament. Playing without two starters – including their leading scorer in Mary Nixon (19.3) – the Lady Jaguars shot just 22.1% from the field, including 5-of-35 (14.3%) in the first half, against the Matadors.
The contest is the last of a three-game swing away from Calihan Hall as the Titans will return home to face Western Michigan on Wednesday, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
THE UDM-SOUTH ALABAMA SERIES
The Titans and South Alabama have met just once before and that was at another tournament as Detroit upended the Jaguars, 74-66, at the Rattler Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., on Dec. 4, 1999.
ABOUT THE LADY JAGUARS
South Alabama opened the season with four straight wins, but that came to an end as the Lady Jags dropped a 47-40 decision to host Cal State Northridge on Friday evening.
Mary Nixon tops the team in scoring at 19.3 points per game, but she has missed the last two games with an injury.
Meghan Dunn is second on the squad at 9.0 ppg., while Mansa El is tallying 7.4 points and 3.3 assists per game.
USA has played the last two games without senior starting guard Camille Reynolds, who is also out with an injury.
SHORT HISTORY WITH THE SUN BELT

MAKE IT A DOUBLE
Sophomore
Shareta Brown posted her 13th career double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds against nationally-ranked Penn State.
The 15 rebounds tied her mark for the second most in her career, trailing only the 18 she had against Bowling Green Last season.
FAMBRO OWNING HER ROLE
Senior
Demeisha Fambro is embracing her role as the Titans' “Sixth Man” with her latest effort a season-high 17 points with six rebounds against No. 6/7 Penn State.
The 17 points were the most since she had 18 against #14/12 Green Bay last season.
On the season, Fambro is averaging 9.5 ppg., third on the team - as she tallied nine at Michigan and seven at Eastern Michigan.
BACK TO HER GAME
After coming off the bench for most of last season - and making the most of it by earning the HL Sixth Player of the Year - senior
Yar Shayok has transitioned back to the starting line-up in great form.
She is currently tied for the team in rebounding (9.5), including a 14-rebound effort against Canisius last week and a 10-rebound outing against No. 6/7 Penn State.
The 10 caroms marked the 39th time in her career that she has pulled down at least 10 boards in a game.
I GOT 20 ON IT
Sophomore
Audrey Matteson netted her first career 20-point game with exactly 20 against No. 6/7 Penn State.
She hit a career-best seven field goals going 7-of-16 from the field, while tying her career high with four 3-pointers in 40 minutes of action.
Matteson has now been in double digits in scoring in all four games and is currently second on the team at 13.8 points per game.
THIS HOOSIER CAN SHOOT
Sophomore
Audrey Matteson is shooting 42.2% from the field so far, and while she has shown the ability to finish inside, it is her outside shot getting all the attention.
She drained four 3-pointers against nationally-ranked Penn State her last time out, tying her season high set at Michigan in the season opener.
The Monticello, Indiana, native had just 12 total field goals last year and five from downtown.
DOMINATING THE BOARDS ALREADY
Through four games, the Titans have owned the glass to the tune of a +9.0 rebounding margin.
UDM dominated the boards against No. 6/7 Penn State with a 46-31 advantage. UDM also outrebounded Michigan, 36-33, and completely owned the boards versus Canisius outrebounding the Golden Griffins, 44-28.
Last season, Detroit won the battle of the boards in 23 of its 34 games, including 11 times by a double-digit margin.
UDM is now 8-5 in its last 13 game when it has won the glass by double digits.
HITTING THE FREE ONES
The Titans came into the Penn State game hitting just 52.4% from the free throw line, but UDM was very effective from the charity stripe going 18-of-22 (81.8%), led by sophomore
Shareta Brown's 10-of-12 night.
For Brown, it was the sixth time in her career that she has made at least 10 free throws in a game
SHAYOK NEARING 1000
Senior
Yar Shayok is now 67 points away from becoming the 17th player in school history to reach 1,000-career points.
Shayok is currently 19th in school history with 933 points and is poised to pass former teammate
Jalesa Jones (939).
The fifth-year senior – who redshirted after playing just two games as a freshman due to a foot injury – is averaging 9.2 points per game in her career. She tallied 7.2 ppg, last season and had her best year so far as a redshirt freshman recording 11.8 ppg.
WHO SHOT THAT?
With her 3-pointer against No. 6/7 Penn State, senior
Yar Shayok recorded her sixth career trifecta, and the first since last year against Howard on Nov. 19, 2011, a span of 34 games.
REYNOLDS ON THE MARK
Freshman
Rosanna Reynolds has taken over the point guard duties for Detroit and leads the team with 16 assists through the first four games.
She has a pair of four-assist efforts already and is coming off a career-high six against No. 6/7 Penn State.
In terms of scoring, Reynolds netted a season-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting against Canisius and added 10 versus the Lady Lions.
