DETROIT (12/3/2012) --The sabre teams scored the top individual results on both the men's and women's side as there were five Titans with top eight finishes on the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams who were in competition on Sunday at Wayne State.
The women's sabre squad all finished right in a row to pace an overall, young, Titan squad. Junior
Shannon Canavan placed fifth and had the top individual finish for Detroit as all of her losses came by just one touch. She was fencing with the sabre weapon after fencing with the foil weapon in each of her first two seasons at Detroit. Right behind her at the Istvan Danosi were fellow sabreists
Eva Berndt who was sixth and
Katie Lang who finished in the eighth spot.
“Shannon, who just moved to the sabre weapon, never fenced so well for us and really did a great job,” said UDM fencing head coach
Todd Dressell.
Men's sabre saw freshman
Andrew Gibbons come in and place eighth while
John Faski was close behind at 11th. Coach Dressell liked what he saw in Gibbons who previously fenced for the Athens Fencing Academy for four years before coming to Detroit.
“Andrew has a lot of potential. He works hard and is motivated to do well and he is going to get nothing but better as we go on,” said Dressell.
Men's foil was the other weapon that had a top eight finisher as
Cole Goike led the squad with an eighth place finish while freshman
Soroush Labaf was 17
th.
“Our men's foil fencers were impressive as Cole fenced well, Soroush did real well for his first time fencing and I'm real happy with how he finished,” said Dressell.
Another nice surprise came from women's epee as newcomer
Roby Wong finished 10
th in her first-ever fencing competition.
“Roby was just spectacular and you couldn't ask for anything more from her. She knew what she was trying to do with her weapon and was in good position and was overall very technically sound today,” said Dressell.
The men's epee squad had a high finisher in
Clint Mikek who was 21
st while a young women's foil squad was led by
Mary Colombo who placed 16th.
The Detroit Titan fencers will continue practicing to gear up for the annual UDM Invitational which will take place at Calihan Hall on Sat., Jan. 12.
