Watch the 1972 Team Recognized on HLN
DETROIT -- The Titan fencing teams hosted their annual alumni meet at Calihan Hall on Sunday. This year's event had a special meaning with it as it marked the 40th anniversary of the 1972 National Championship Team that the Titans captured in fencing.
Freddie Hooker, Tyrone Simmons, Pat Clancy, William Giovan, Elizabeth Kocab and Dan Cantillon were just a few of the names on hand who came back to Calihan Hall to take part in the day's events.
The current varsity team hosted bouts in the morning against the alumni before a reception was held for everyone.
Following the reception, the 1972 team was joined by all the alumni as the championship squad received public recognition during the men's basketball game Sunday afternoon.
It was a chance for the current team to embrace the history of the fencing team - which remains the lone Titan team to ever win a National Championship - and learn from the former All-American athletes.
The next competition for the varsity fencing team will be the Midwest Fencing Championships on Feb. 3-4 that will be hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
