GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Detroit women's lacrosse team officially kicked off its 2012 season against one of the best teams in the nation as the Titans fell to No. 4 Florida, 22-3, on Sunday afternoon.

“Florida is one of the best teams in the country,” said head coach Laura Maness. “It was a learning experience for our girls to come down here and play them and I always believe in playing good competition so that you are prepared once conference play starts.”

Seniors Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson) and Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace) and junior Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, CA/Dublin) each netted a goal in the contest, while freshman Tessa Keuler (Oregon City, OR/Oregon City) came up with her first collegiate point on an assist.

The Titans played the fourth-ranked Gators tough to start trailing only 4-1 through the first 15 minutes of the game. After Florida opened with a pair of goals less than two minutes in, the defense held UF to just two goals in the next 14 minutes as Boissonneault netted the first goal of the season – and the 189th of her career - at the 17:03 mark.

The Gators then showed why they are one of the favorites to win a national title by tallying 10-straight goals to end the first and 12 in a row to take a 16-1 lead with 23 minutes left.

Eidem notched her marker to end that run with 18:46 left, while Keuler found Hamze for the Titans' third strike with just over two minutes left on the clock.

Florida outshot the Titans, 38-13, and controlled the time of possession by winning 22 of the game's 26 draw controls.

Freshman Lexie McCormick (Peterborough, ON/St. Peters) played the entire game in net making 10 saves, while picking up a game-high five ground balls.

The Titans will look to shake this loss off as they prepare to open NLC play on Tuesday when they visit Jacksonville. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m., at D.B. Milne Field.

Game Notes:
It was the first game for the Titans under coach Maness…Detroit is now 0-3 all-time against ranked teams with the first two games against Ohio State…It was also the first-ever game versus a top-5 team…Along with Keuler, two other Titans made their collegiate debut in Amanda Guthrie and Taylor Marshall…The four draw controls were the fewest by the Titans in their short four-year history…
