NEWARK, Del. – The Detroit Titans opened the year on the road against a nationally-ranked Delaware squad and were thinking upset early, but a huge second-half run lifted the 19th-ranked Blue Hens to a 19-6 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) led Detroit with three goals, while senior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) and sophomore
Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) both tallied a goal and an assist. Senior
John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) added the other goal, while sophomore
Tom Masterson (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas CCS) had two assists.
The game was tied at 4-all at the half, but Delaware took control by outscoring the Titans 12-1 in the third period.
Matthews got UDM on the board first by scoring the first goal of the 2012 season about midway through the first. The Blue Hens then scored three straight, but the red, white and blue knotted it at 3-all in the second as Masterson fed Harris for a goal and then it was Harris earning the assist by finding Adams.
After Delaware went back in front, Nowicki tallied a shorthanded goal, his second career man-down marker. After the Blue Hens turned it over, Matthews collected the ground ball and found Nowicki, who fired it past the goalie.
The game went into the half all squared at 4-apiece, but after the break, Delaware took complete control netting three goals in the first four minutes of the third before Adams' second tally ended that spurt. The Blue Hens then scored 12-straight to give them an insurmountable lead.
Junior
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) had a game-high four caused turnovers and a team-best five ground balls. Matthews also added three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Freshman
Chris Kelly (Valrico, FL/Saint Andrews) started in net and made 13 saves.
The Titans will return to action on Thursday as Detroit visits Ohio State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., and will be played inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex. The Titans home opener is set for next Sunday, Feb. 12, against Michigan. For information on the limited tickets left,
