OMAHA, Neb.-- Second-seeded Kansas topped Detroit 65-50 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at CenturyLink Center Friday night. The Titans' 2011-12 season ends at 22-14 overall.
"Kansas is a great defensive team and their ability to lock us up on the perimeter really was a big key," Titan head coach Ray McCallum said. "I'm proud of our guys, we gave a great effort and we had an outstanding season."
Foul trouble hampered Detroit throughout as junior Doug Anderson fouled out midway through the second half and other key Titans played with four fouls in the second period.
KU (28-6) survived an early scare as the lead changed hands 10 times and the score was tied eight times in the first half. Anderson's dunk with nine minutes to go in the first stanza forced a KU timeout and gave the Titans a 21-19 advantage.
It would be all KU from there for the next 15:55, however. Kansas closed the half on a 15-3 run and added a 19-4 spurt coming out of halftime to open a 25-point lead. During that stretch, Detroit mustered just 2-of-22 shooting while Kansas made 13-of-21 from the floor to take command.
KU big man and Player of the Year candidate Thomas Robinson had 16 points and 13 rebounds on the night but it was the smothering perimeter defense that stood out for the Jayhawks. Kansas held Detroit's starting guards to just 7-of-32 from the field and 2-of-13 from three-point range. The 50 Titan points marked a season low.
Detroit center Eli Holman notched his fifth double-double of the season and 29th of his three-year Titan career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He was complimentary of Robinson's game after a much-talked about battle inside between the two big men.
"Thomas Robinson is a great overall player, knowing where he is at on the floor, his rebounding, he's a vocal leader out on the floor and that's very big for the team," Holman said to the media following the game. "The team looks to him when everything takes a turn for the worse, and he controls traffic so he's a great player."
Anderson led the Titans with 15 points despite fouling out with more than 11 minutes left in the game. LaMarcus Lowe had four points and nnie rebounds while Ray McCallum added eight points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Robinson's 16 points led all players, part of three KU players to reach double figures. Elijah Johnson chipped-in 15 while Tyshawn Taylor contributed 10 for the Jayhawks, who were the only No. 2 seed to win Friday (Missouri and Duke both lost).
Kansas will play Purdue in the round of 32 on Sunday in Omaha.
Notes: This was the first time in last three NCAA appearances that Detroit lost its first game (1998, 99) ... Ray McCallum scored his 1,000th career point on a layup in the sceond half ... Chase Simon, Eli Holman and Ray McCallum are Detroit's first trio of 1,000-point scorers on the same team since 2000 (Rashad Phillips, Willie Green, Terrell Riggs, Desmond Ferguson) ... It was the final game of the Titan careers of Holman, Simon, Donavan Foster and LaMarcus Lowe, all of whom have already graduated or will in May.
