Titans Win PGA Village Match Play, 4-0

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Titan men's golf team braved a tough course and windy conditions to post an impressive win as UDM blanked Morningside College, 4-0, at the PGA Village Match Play on Tuesday afternoon.

The event was held at the famous Wanamaker Golf Club, the same course that holds the first round of the PGA Tour Qualifying School every year.

“It was a fun day,” said head coach Mark Engel. “The team played well, but they also had a lot of fun out there. Match play is something different for the guys and they all enjoyed playing this format.”

Junior Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) led the way for Detroit dominating his opponent, 7 and 6. Reyers took control right from the start with a birdie to win the first hole and then opening a 5-0 lead after five holes.

Senior Mark Hicks (Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON/Niagara) also posted a big win, 5 and 4, over his counterpart. He took the lead after the third hole and then was up by four at the turn.

Freshman Michael Nedoszytko (Scarborough, ON/McNeil) had the most exciting match on the day with it going all the way until the 18th and final hole. Nedoszytko was up by four through nine, but Morningside's Alex Oniel would cut that in half with back-to-back chip-in birdies on 10 and 11. He was up by one heading into 18th and halved that hole with a par for the victory.

Sophomore Brendan Leonard (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict) also had a win on the day by forfeit. He was up by three with three left when the forfeit occurred, while freshman Lucas Kim (Toronto, ON/Silverthorn) was up in his match until darkness forced the rest of the match to be cancelled.

“The wind was pretty incredible and the team played well with it. It was good to get the win after a few days of practice and now we will get back to work with the days we have left down here,” added Engel.

Detroit will not play in any more events while in Florida, but will hit the links each day for some tough practices. UDM will be back in action on Mar. 26 when the Titans compete in the Butler Invitational at the Prestwick Country Club in Avon, IN.
