SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Seniors
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson) and
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace) combined for 12 goals to help the Detroit women's lacrosse team post its first win under head coach
Laura Maness as the Titans downed San Diego State, 18-16, on Tuesday evening.
“It definitely feels good to get that first win,” said head coach
Laura Maness. “I feel good for the team because they really played hard. We wanted to get on top of them early and we did that, but they had more depth than us and they made a run.”
Both Boissonneault and Eidem struck for six goals. It was the 15th time in Boissonneault's career that she netted five or more goals in a game, while it was the 11th time for Eidem.
“We did a really good job of causing turnovers in the midfield and that really helped our offense,” added Maness.
Five other Titans netted a goal in the contest with junior
Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, CA/Dublin) also adding an assist for two points on the day.
Detroit (1-3) never trailed in the contest and broke the game open with five straight goals to end the first half, which was part of UDM outscoring SDSU (2-3) 9-1 for a 34-minute stretch from the middle of the first half to the middle of the second.
The game was tied at 5-all with 18 minutes left in the first when UDM started its charge. Boissonneault and Hamze notched back-to-back goals and that was followed by a free position goal from Boissonneault at the 10:21 mark.
Hamze assisted on another goal as her pass enabled sophomore
Tara Grady (San Jose, CA/Pioneer) to find the back of the net for a 9-5 lead with 9:11 left. Just 30 seconds later, Eidem beat the keeper and UDM went into the half up 10-5.
Detroit started the scoring in the second half as Boissonneault connected on another free position goal. After the Aztecs stopped that run of six-straight, the red, white and blue countered with another three-straight markers as Eidem, sophomore
Morgan Lear (San Ramon, CA/Dougherty Valley) and Boissonneault each tallied to give the Titans their biggest lead, 14-6, with 16:30 remaining.
SDSU got back in the game by scoring six of the next seven goals, including four-straight at one point, to get within three, 15-12, with 8:03 left, but Boissonneault's fifth goal stopped that spurt. She also gave the Titans a four-goal advantage again with her final marker at 5:18 to make it a 17-13 contest before two goals in the last two minutes made it a two-point outcome.
Senior
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) had a goal, two ground balls and four draw controls in the win, while Hamze added four draw controls and two ground balls. Boissonneault posted four caused turnovers and two GB's and defenseman
Britany Busch (Clio, MI/Powers Catholic) tallied a pair of caused turnovers.
Freshman
Lexie McCormick (Peterborough, ON/St. Peters) picked up her first win in between the pipes, stopping a season-high 11 shots.
Detroit will end its three-game West Coast road swing on Thursday when it takes on California. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. (EST) and there will be no live stats for the game.
