DETROIT -- The first four-year senior class was honored on Sunday and posted six of UDM's eight goals, but the Titans could not hang on to an early lead and fell, 19-8, to High Point at Titan Field.
Seniors
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson),
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace),
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) and
Alycsa Valentine (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) were honored prior to the game along with their family. The four comprise the first four-year class to come through Detroit since the program started in 2009.
Eidem ended the game with a team-best three goals, while Boissonneault netted two and had an assist. Mahorn also found the back of the net.
What began with a one hour delay due to severe weather just four minutes into the contest looked promising for Detroit (4-8, 3-2 NLC) as the Titans were up 3-0 at the 21:05 mark. Eidem started the scoring taking a pass from sophomore
Tara Grady (San Jose, CA/Pioneer) and beating the keeper.
After the storm passed and play resumed, junior
Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, CA/Dublin) put UDM up 2-0 on a free position goal and Boissonneault followed with an unassisted marker.
High Point (10-3, 4-0 NLC) then tallied six-straight goals to take the lead, but that run was broken up by Hamze with 12:22 left in the first half. The Panthers scored two more times for an 8-4 advantage, but the red, white and blue cut into that deficit with two goals to end the period.
Another long HPU run was the difference as the Panthers netted six straight to open a 14-6 lead.
The senior duo of Boissonneault and Eidem ended that as Boissonneault caused a turnover and found Eidem for her hat trick with 15:50 left.
The last Titan goal came from Mahorn who posted her lone tally with 4:03 remaining.
Freshman
Lexie McCormick (Peterborough, ON/St. Peters) made 12 saves for Detroit before Valentine – who started the game at defense - came in with 7:54 on the clock.
Eidem had a team-high five ground balls, while Boissonneault, Mahorn and sophomore
Morgan Lear (San Ramon, CA/Dougherty Valley) each came away with a pair of caused turnovers. Boissonneault, Eidem and junior
Britany Busch (Clio, MI/Powers Catholic) also added three draw controls apiece.
The Titans will now play two straight on the road as they visit Presbyterian on Friday. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
