BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- It was another season low for the Titan men's golf team as the squad posted its best tournament score since 2007 en route to a fourth-place finish at the NYX Hoosier Invitational.

“The performance didn't just begin yesterday, it began with the hard work in practice,” said head coach Mark Engel. “We felt really good coming out here and to finish this high in a good field shows that we are getting ready for the Horizon League Championship.”

Detroit totaled a 285 on the day, its third-straight round with a season-low 18 and tying for the 10th best mark in school history. In fact, the last time UDM posted a score that low was in the third round of the 2010 NCAA Central Regional.

The Titans finished overall with an 861 (290, 286, 285), the sixth best mark in school history and the best team tally since setting the school record with an 832 at the 2007 IPFW Fall Classic. They trailed only top-50 programs Northwestern (841) and Indiana (853) as well as IUPUI (852).  UDM also finished ahead of HL rivals Wright State, Butler and Youngstown State and topped crosstown rival Oakland.

“We made a lot of shots, but we also felt like we left some out there,” said Engel. “But I am happy with the way we played. Yesterday, we threw out two 75's and I would love to have that in every tournament and today, we had two guys shoot under par.”

Junior Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) led three Titans in the top 15 by sharing 10th with a career-best 214 (72, 73, 69), He was also the fourth Titan to post a round under par on the weekend shooting a 2-under 69 on the final 18.

Sophomore Brendan Leonard (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict) carded his second 1-under 70 of the tournament on Sunday and finished tied for 12th by posting his career low of 215 (70, 75, 70). His pair of 70's was also a career best for a round.

Freshman Lucas Kim (Toronto, ON/Silverthorn) ended in a tie for 15th place with his season-low 216 (74, 68, 74), while Michael Nedoszytko (Scarborough, ON/McNeil) shot a 1-over 72 to finish with his season-best 218 (75, 71, 72) for 25th. Senior Mark Hicks (Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON/Niagara) tied his season low with a 229 (74, 74, 81), tying for 66th place.

“I feel like we are where we need to be right now as we head into our home event and a course we are familiar with,” added Engel.

Detroit returns to action on Friday when it hosts the Detroit Titans Invitational. The 54-hole event begins with 36 on Friday and the final 18 on Saturday at the Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland.
