Video Interview with Coach Lupenec
DETROIT (8/17/2012) -- A late goal from Central Michigan (1-0) at the 87:46 mark carried the Chippewas to a 1-0 win over the Detroit Titans (0-1) in women's soccer action at Titan Field on Friday afternoon. The contest marked the second-straight year the two sides faced each other to open the season.
“Defensively we did a good job against a good team out of the MAC. They are always up there competing for a MAC Championship,” said UDM women's soccer head coach
Mike Lupenec.
“I think our back line and our defensive mid
Alyssa Riley did an excellent job with our goaltender. The issue we had is offensively we didn't keep the ball possession-wise which basically made us ineffective with regards to going forward.”
The first half featured CMU holding a 5-4 shooting advantage.
The second half saw the Chippewas take some offensive opportunities but the new-look defensive backfield stood its ground along with goalkeeper
Nora Abolins. Abolins finished with eight saves on the day.
Kaely Schlosser scored in the 88th minute from just inside the 18-yard box netting the lone goal of the game. One final opportunity came for Detroit as
Nina Carter broke in on net in the final seconds of the game but her shot, that was in the actual final second of the game, went wide ending Detroit's chance at a tie.
The next game for the Titans will come on Monday, August 20 as Canisius will head to Titan Field for a 3:00 p.m. contest. For more game information, please visit
