DETROIT (9/16/2012) -- It was 90's Groove Day at Titan Field and Haley Burtraw and Rebekah Dornbos each grooved a shot in the net for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to lead Detroit to a 2-0 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars on Sunday afternoon.

“I thought the team gave a great effort today,” said UDM goalkeeper coach Mike Sheehy.  “We had our game plan, we worked the game plan, we had a lot of possession and we won most of the 50-50 balls in the middle.”

Burtraw's goal in the 27th minute put UDM (3-4-1) on the scoreboard first as she tallied her third goal of the season. Burtraw made a move at the top of the 18-yard box and cleared enough room to take a shot that sailed high and hard over the goalkeeper and into the upper left corner.

The pressure continued to come from the Titans against the Jaguars (1-9-0) in the second half and it resulted in a penalty kick at the 62:28 mark that gave Detroit its second goal of the game. Nina Carter sent a nice ball to Kaitlyn Quarrell who had a clear path to the net but was hauled down inside the 18-yard box and the Titans were awarded the PK. Dornbos made no mistake converting on the penalty kick for her second goal of the season. Dornbos is now 7-7 in career penalty kicks for the Titans.

Detroit applied constant pressure throughout the game holding a 7-2 shooting advantage in the first half and an 8-2 advantage in the second for a 15-4 overall total. At the half, Detroit took four shots on goal to just one for IUPUI.

“In the back we stayed pretty solid,” said defender Victoria Sollestre who played all 90 minutes of Sunday's victory in the back. “It's a great accomplishment protecting the home turf and getting the shutout.”

Goalkeeper Nora Abolins made one save collecting her third shutout of the season and 18th clean slate of her career.

Prior to the game, UDM head coach Mike Lupenec was honored for his 175th career victory as a head coach.

The next game for Detroit will come on Saturday as UDM will start Horizon League play at Green Bay with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
