Fall Season Begins for Women's Lacrosse on Sunday

Video Interview with Maness

DETROIT (9/19/2012)
-- The Detroit Titans will get ready for their first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference with four fall events, including its' first-ever alumni game on Sept. 29.

The Titans will begin the fall season this Sunday with three games at Robert Morris. Detroit will play Canisius at 11:00 a.m., St. Bonaventure at 1:00 p.m., and Duquesne at 3:00 p.m.

“We just started our practices and so far so good. I'm seeing a lot of heart, a lot of hustle out on the field and we just need to fine-tune things and get everyone up to par with what we do here at Detroit,” said UDM women's lacrosse coach Laura Maness, who was named the 2012 Coach of the Year in the National Lacrosse Conference in her first year with the team.

After this weekend, the women's lacrosse team will host its first ever Alumni Game on Sept. 29 at Titan Field as part of an Alumni Reunion scheduled along with the men's lacrosse team.

Also on Detroit's fall schedule will be a contest against Marquette and Grand Valley State at Grand Valley State on Oct. 14 and one weekend of action at Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa., on Oct. 20.

“We're going to be playing everybody and kind of switching up positions in the fall just trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together,” said Maness. “We're really just looking at a lot of different options and we're going to go from there so we can figure out offense and defense and strategy heading into our spring games.”

The Titans will have 11 newcomers on the roster this season after graduating its first ever four-year senior class in 2012.

“There is a definitely a learning curve there. There are adjustments that need to be made just with our style of play, but all 11 girls are really picking it up quickly. They all have something different to bring to the table which is great,” added Maness.

The Titans joined the Atlantic Sun Conference after being part of the National Lacrosse Conference for the first four seasons of women's lacrosse at UDM. Last season, Detroit finished with an 8-9 overall record and reached the NLC Semifinals, while setting a new program best for wins in a single-season.
