DETROIT (1/12/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing squads welcomed five teams to Calihan Hall on Saturday for the annual UDM Fencing Invitational and sophomore
Katie Lang of the women's sabre team led the Titans with an overall 13-2 mark on the day.
Teams from Oakland, Wayne State, Cleveland State, Michigan State and Michigan were all at Calihan Hall.
The day started with a pair of victories for both Titan varsity squads as the women won 17-10 over Oakland, while the men won 15-12. Both men's and women's teams ran into tough squads from Michigan, Michigan State, and Wayne State before ending the day with victories over Cleveland State.
Lang went 3-0 against Oakland and Michigan before dropping a bout against Michigan State to go 8-1 after three rounds of fencing. Lang went 2-1 against Wayne State before finishing perfect against CSU with her third 3-0 mark of the day.
The women's sabre squad won all five of its competitions. Lang was 13-2, but junior
Eva Berndt was 11-4 and fellow junior
Shannon Canavan was 9-6. The sabre team was able to capture points in every category coming up with all five Titan points in a 5-4 sabre win in the 22-5 setback to Michigan.
The men's side saw freshman
Andrew Gibbons of the sabre lead Detroit as he finished 8-7 overall in his first collegiate competition. He went a perfect 3-0 over Michigan State and collected two wins over Oakland and Cleveland State.
“It's a young team we have, but we will continue to work hard and prepare diligently for every competition,” said UDM men's and women's fencing head coach

The next team competition for the Titans will come on Feb. 2 when the men's and women's teams head to Evanston, Illinois, for the Northwestern Mega-Meet.
