The Titans swept their Chicago Horizon League counterparts last weekend defeating Loyola, 76-66, and UIC, 74-68, to move to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the Horizon League. UDM begins the week tied for second in the HL with Youngstown State. Sophomore
Shareta Brown tallied 20.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in the two wins, while senior
Demeisha Fambro averaged 18.0 ppg., including a season-high 20 against UIC.
Detroit is 6-0 at home on the year and has won 12-straight on Dick Vitale Court dating back to last season, a number that is currently tied with Appalachian State and Texas A&M for the 12th longest home winning streak in the nation.
Cleveland State is 10-8 on the year and 2-3 in conference play. The last time these two teams met, the Vikings came away with a 77-66 win, their ninth in 10 games, but since that victory, CSU has dropped three in a row, all at home.
The Vikings are led by senior Shalonda Winton, who is second in the Horizon League with 21.6 ppg., as well as second in rebounding (10.8) and assists (4.5). She had a great game against UDM a couple of weeks ago ending with 32 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Cori Coleman is second on the team putting in 12.3 ppg., while Kiersten Green is averaging 9.5 ppg., and 4.1 rpg.
CSU ranks third in the league in scoring (66.2) and is fourth in scoring defense (63.3).
Following the game, the Titans will take off for Milwaukee as Detroit plays on the road against the Panthers on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
THE DETROIT-CLEVELAND STATE SERIES
Cleveland State got the better of Detroit in the first meeting at home, 77-66, but the Titans still lead the all-time series 34-12. UDM won all three games against the Vikings last season, but with the setback earlier in the year, the two programs have now split the last eight meetings.
Detroit has dominated the series in the Motor City with a 19-3 advantage in Calihan Hall.
BROWN #3 IN THE NATION
In the latest NCAA stats, released this past Monday, sophomore
Shareta Brown continues to be among the nation's leaders in scoring and field-goal percentage.
Brown began the week third in the nation in scoring at 23.6 ppg., behind only Jerica Coley of Florida International (24.7) and Georgetown's Sugar Rodgers, Georgetown (24.1). She is also third in the country in field-goal percentage hitting 60.0%, trailing Connecticut's Stefanie Dolson (60.5%) and Kelsey Bone of Texas A&M (60.1%).
The only Titan to ever lead the nation in a statistical category was Brigid Mulroy back in 2010 as she was first in three-point field-goal percentage (50.5%).
Brown was fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage (55.9%) last season.
OTHER NATIONAL RANKINGS
UDM has two other players among the top 70 in rebounding as sophomore
Shareta Brown is 59th with 9.4 per night, while senior
Yar Shayok is 70th pulling down 9.2 per game.
As a team, Detroit is 14th in the country in field-goal percentage (45.3%), 29th in rebounding margin (7.4), 32nd in scoring (71.4) and 36th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0).
The Titans are also top 100 in turnovers per game (47th – 15.0), assists per game (53rd – 15.1), scoring margin (72nd – +8.2) and three-point field goals per game (82nd – 5.8).
PERFECT AT HOME
UDM is 6-0 at home this season - averaging 83.8 points per game - and has now won 12-straight games on Dick Vitale Court dating back to last year.
A RUDE HOST
During the 12-straight wins, UDM is tallying 77.7 ppg., and allowing just 56.6 (+21.1). UDM is shooting just under 50% from the field hitting 344-of-690 shots (49.8%), and is outrebounding its opponents by more than 10 a game (40.6-29.7).
The home winning streak is currently tied for the 12th longest in the nation and the most for UDM since it set a school record with 17 consecutive victories, rolled up during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons.
In Detroit's history, the Titans have now compiled seven home winning streaks of 11 games or more.
MORE ON CALIHAN MAGIC
Over a longer stretch of time, the Titans have posted a 18-3 ledger in their last 21 home games dating back to the 2010-11 campaign, as well as 33-11 in their last 44 home games.
UDM is also 41-22 in Calihan Hall since head coach Autumn Rademacher returned to her alma mater in 2008.
In 35 years of play in the Motor City, the Titans have enjoyed a 269-143 (.634) home court record.
A PAIR OF 1,000-POINT SCORERS
With senior
Yar Shayok and sophomore
Shareta Brown each coming away with their 1,000 career point this season, it marks the first time since the 2006 season (Katie Solner and Lindsay Pasquinzo) that Detroit has had a pair of 1,000-point scorers on its roster.
It is also the sixth time in school history that UDM has had two 1,000-point scorers on the same team, which includes head coach Autumn Rademacher and teammate Faith Cy in 1995-96.
ON A HOT STREAK
Senior
Demeisha Fambro poured in a game and season-high 20 points against UIC her last time out.
It was the fourth career 20-point game for Fambro and her first in Horizon League play.
She has now had one 20-point performance in each of her seasons with her last coming at Ball State last year when netted 21.
Her career high is 25 versus Ball State in 2010.
COACH RAD IN SOLE POSSESSION OF THIRD
She did it as a player, but with the win against Loyola, head coach Autumn Rademacher moved past Sue Kreszewski (1977-80) - the first Titan coach - and into third place in UDM history with 72 wins.
Fred Procter (1990-96) leads UDM with 93 career wins, while DeWayne Jones (1983-90) is at 91.
OVER 500?
Head coach Autumn Rademacher enters the game against the Vikings with a 72-72 career record, the second time she has been at .500 this season.
A win over CSU would push her into the positive margin for the first time as a head coach.
It is not like Coach Rademacher took over a top of the line program as UDM was coming off back-to-back last-place finishes and just 11 total wins from 2006-08.
In her time at her alma mater, Detroit has posted two winning seasons, a 20-win campaign, four-straight years with a conference tournament victory and a trip to the WNIT in 2012, the first postseason action for UDM since the 1997 NCAA Tournament.
THE MAD HATTER
Junior
Megan Hatter finished with seven points for the second-straight game and tied her career high with nine rebounds against UIC.
The other two occasions that she had nine boards was against Youngstown State last season in a home win as well as against Wright State in the HL Quarterfinals.
SHEARER, FAMBRO APPROACHING TOP 10 FOR 3'S
Junior
Senee Shearer and senior
Demeisha Fambro are currently on the heels of putting their name in the top 10 in school history in 3-pointers.
Both shooters have 88 career 3-pointers and are seven away from tying Terri Ford (1986-90) and Katie Solner (2002-06) for 10th place at 95.
YAR LOOKING TO MOVE UP
Senior
Yar Shayok made history at South Florida on Dec. 31 as she became just the 17th player in school history to reach 1,000 points.
With 10 points against UIC, Shayok passed Mary Lillie (1978-82) and Katie Solner (2002-06) and moved into 15th place in scoring with 1,044. Next up for Shayok is Lindsay Pasquinzo (2002-06) at 1,143 points.
The fifth-year senior – who redshirted after playing just two games as a freshman due to a foot injury – is averaging 8.2 points this season and 9.1 points per game in her career.
SHE'S BACK
Junior
Senee Shearer made a successful return to the court starting at Wright State on Jan. 16, where she played 31 minutes, finishing with seven points on a pair of 3-pointers. Shearer even got UDM on the board nailing the game's first shot - a stark contrast from last year when she missed her first 16 three-point attempts.
Since her return, Shearer has increased her scoring in each game with nine against Loyola and 15 with three 3-pointers versus UIC.
Shearer helped the Titans to a 20-win campaign and a trip to the Horizon League Championship last season, but tore her ACL in the title game after scoring 14 points in the first 23 minutes.
She finished second on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg., last year and was third in the conference in three-point field goals (75) and third in the HL and 59th in NCAA in three-point field goals per game (2.27). Her 75 3-pointers on the season also ranked second all-time on the Titan single-season list.
DOMINATING THE BOARDS
Detroit has outrebounded its opponents in 15 of its 17 games - including six times by double digits - and currently owns a + 7.4 rebounding margin, good for first in the Horizon League and 29th in the nation.
UDM dominated the boards against #6/7 Penn State with a 46-31 advantage. UDM also completely owned the boards versus Canisius (44-28), WMU (49-36), at Ohio (48-37), against Lourdes (42-25), and versus Madonna (48-26).
Last season, Detroit won the battle of the boards in 23 of its 34 games, including 11 times by a double-digit margin.
A REBOUNDING MACHINE
Shareta Brown was just one rebound shy of her career high when she totaled 17 rebounds against Loyola on Jan. 24, and that was just a week after tallying 16 at Wright State.
She also had a pair of double-doubles in those games netting 25 and 26 points, respectively, against Raiders and the Ramblers.
In her career, she is averaging 9.0 rebounds per game.
REYNOLDS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE FREE ONE
Freshman
Rosanna Reynolds started the year 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the free throw line in her first six games, but has now made 24 of her last 27 (88.8%) at the charity stripe.
On the year, she leads UDM in free-throw percentage at 78.0%.
LONG RANGE TITANS
With the return of junior
Senee Shearer, the Titans set a season high with 11 three-pointers at Wright State on Jan. 24, and followed that with a 9-of-23 effort against Loyola.
The 11 treys were the most since UDM hit 11 against Youngstown State on Jan.28, 2010.
In the last three games, the Titans have hit 27 three-pointers, one more than they had in the prior six.
HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE
UDM netted 41 points in the first half against Loyola on Jan. 24, the sixth time the Titans have posted 40 or more in the first 20 minutes on the year and the 11th time it has happened in either half.
The 75 points versus Loyola on Thursday marked the sixth time this season that Detroit has scored 75 or more in a game.
Detroit tops the HL in scoring at 71.4 ppg., as well as field-goal percentage (45.3%).
#WHAT CAN BROWN DO 4 YOU
Sophomore
Shareta Brown's offensive game has her among the nation's leaders as she is currently third in the country in scoring (23.6) and field-goal percentage (60.0%).
Brown broke the Titan school record with 43 points in a game against Lourdes on Dec. 10, and added her fourth 30-point game of the season -and the sixth of her career - with 34 points at IPFW on Dec. 18. Her six 30-point games are tied with Cassandra Pack (1983-87) for the most in school history in a career.
Her 43-point outburst is tied with IPFW's Amanda Hyde for the highest in Division I.
YAR ETCHES HER NAME IN SCHOOL RECORD BOOK
Senior
Yar Shayok is currently second in school history with 1,008 rebounds, and will most likely stay in second trailing Titan Hall-of-Famer Cheryl Williams (1,368).
With that said, she is only the second Titan to post 1,000 points and rebounds in their career behind only Williams.
She is currently second on the team and fourth in the Horizon League in rebounding (9.4), which includes eight double-digit efforts.
She grabbed a season-high 15 against Lourdes and also had 11 boards at Wright State and 10 boards against #6/7 Penn State and at Cleveland State.
The 10 caroms at Wright State on Jan. 24 marked the 46th time in her career that she has pulled down at least 10 boards in a game.
In her career, she is averaging 8.8 rebounds and has 46 games with double-digit rebounds, including 17 as a redshirt freshman and 16 as a sophomore. She pulled down 10.2 rpg., as a sophomore, a number that ranks fourth among the single-season records at UDM.
OFFENSE WINS GAMES, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
UDM is currently third in the Horizon League allowing 63.2 ppg., and second holding opponents to just 38.0% shooting.
BACK IN DOUBLES
Senior
Demeisha Fambro reached double figures for the 10th time this season and the fourth-straight game with 20 points against UIC. That came after she had 15 at Wright State 10 at Cleveland State and 16 versus Loyola.
She had a streak of five-straight games in double figures earlier in the year and is averaging 10.8 points - second on the team and 17th in the HL - on the season.
