Detroit Battles Warm & Humid Conditions In Louisville

Official Results

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (10/5/2013) --
The University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team made its annual trip to Kentucky on Saturday and the Titans had to fight not only a strong field, but unusually warm conditions at the 12th Annual Greater Louisville Classic.

The Titans – running in the 8k Gold Division that featured a number of regionally ranked programs – took 29th overall with 733 points. It was the first time UDM had run in the Gold Race since 2009.

"It was a tough day," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray. "We labored a little in the warm and humid conditions."

Senior Martin Nelkie led Detroit by finishing 69th in a season-low 25:42, just four seconds off his career best. The run was his top performance ever at Louisville and is tied for the fifth best effort ever by a Titan harrier at the event.

"It was a smart and strong race for Marty and he was faster at the end," said Coach Murray.

Sophomore Derek Gielarowski was the next runner in for UDM at 26:40 for 159th, while senior Sam Felton earned 193rd in 17:04. Junior Ryan Hofsess crossed the finish line in 27:15 for 204th and junior George Holman clocked a 27:39.

Rounding out the Titan squad was sophomore Austin Wigent 's 28:18, while junior Ylli Alla ran a 28:50 and sophomore Joshua Carolin posted personal record with a time of 28:54.

The Titans will be back in action in two weeks when the red, white and blue make a trip to the Keystone State to run in the Penn State National Invitational on Oct. 18.
