DETROIT (10/7/2013) -- It was an offensive day for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team as junior
Alyssa Riley had her second career hat trick with three goals and an assist to lead the Titans to an 8-0 victory over the NAIA-Marygrove Mustangs Monday afternoon at Titan Field. UDM controlled the game from start to finish with a 41-0 advantage in total shots and 23 on goal and except for substitutions, held Marygrove completely off the stat sheet.
Freshmen
Mary LeAnnais and
Aubrey Formica each scored their first collegiate goals for Detroit (6-6-1) while sophomore
Sara Zawacki netted her first goal as a Titan. Sophomore's
Jennifer Borawski and
Heather Brown also added goals. Junior
Alyssa Lotito had two assists while Formica and LeAnnais both contributed helpers. Junior Haley Burtaw earned an assist as well to round out the UDM scoring. With two helpers for Lotito, she now leads the Horizon League in total assists and was 33rd in the nation entering Monday's game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Martha Dunbar did not have to make a save making her third career shutout.
Riley started the scoring her fourth goal of the year in the 11th minute using her head off a pass from junior
Alyssa Lotito. Formica took a hard shot on the next goal that gave the rebound right to LeAnnais who cashed it in at 34:28 giving both their first Titan points. The teams would enter the half with Detroit up 2-0 and the Titans holding a 19-0 overall shooting advantage.
The second half continued to feature great possession from UDM. Borawski started the scoring run gathering a loose ball inside the six-yard box for her second goal of the season that came off a Lotito shot. Fellow sophomore Brown was next in line to score as she stole the ball from the Mustangs (3-9) and tallied her third of the year, and fifth in the last five games, to put UDM up 4-0 in the 56th minute.
Riley netted her second of the day at 68:26 as a loose rebound from a LeAnnais shot found the foot of Riley and the back of the net. Formica's first career marker came in the 75th minute as she took a pass from Riley and blasted it into the net for a 6-0 Titan lead.
Zawacki was next on the scoring list recording her first goal as a Titan, after coming to UDM from Horizon League rival Milwaukee, to make it 7-0 for the home team.
The final offense came from Riley who put in her second head ball of the day taking a Burtraw corner at 89:48 and putting in her third goal of the afternoon. The eight goals marks the highest offensive output for UDM this year and most goals since a 10-0 win at Marygrove on Aug. 31, 2011. Riley happened to also have three goals and one assist in that 2011 game as a freshman.
Next up for Detroit will be this Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the UDM men's soccer team. The women's game will start at 1:00 p.m. against Green Bay followed by the men's game at 3:00 p.m. vs. UIC. Admission to all UDM soccer games is free.
