CLEVELAND (11/12/2013) -- The first fencing competition of the 2013-14 campaign took place this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio as three members of the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team competed in the North American Cup. Freshman
Aaron Dittel, sophomore
Andrew Gibbons, and junior
Yaroslav Ivanov were all competing in Ohio this past weekend.
"This is a really strong competition and it's good for them to see what it was like to go up against top competition," said UDM varsity fencing coach
Todd Dressell.
Dittel was in events finishing 301st of 310 in Division I Men's Epee on Sunday but he was also 151st in the Junior Men's Epee competition on Friday. On Friday in the junior event, he posted a pair of wins in the pool round and in the first direct elimination bout he fell 14-13.
"Aaron fenced really well and did a good job and he hung in there for his pools and in his direct elimination. He was progressing throughout and I think we made some breakthroughs in terms of approaching a stronger opponent and what to do and developing growth in his tactical game," said Dressell.
Ivanov also competed in two events as the upperclassman was 276th in the Division I Men's Epee on Sunday and on Monday, he tied for 173rd position in the Division I Men's Foil. In each, he captured a single win in the pool round.
Gibbons was 143rd in the Junior Men's Sabre event on Monday.
The next event for the Titans will come on Dec. 8 at Wayne State in the annual Istvan Danosi.
