Titans Drop 3OT Heartbreaker to Stony Brook in 2K Sports Classic

DETROIT (11/24/13) – Jameel Warney finished with 32 points, including a layup with five seconds left in triple overtime to help lift Stony Brook past the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team, 104-102, on Sunday at Calihan Hall as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. For the second-straight day the Titans had the final shot, but just like Saturday Juwan Howard Jr.'s three-pointer fell short at the buzzer.

The Titans trailed by three 100-97, before battling back to take a 101-100 lead with 2:25 left in the third overtime. Stony Brook then took the lead again 102-101, before Howard made a free throw to tie it 102. Warney then grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back with five seconds left to win the game.

Detroit (3-4) was led by senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma who had a career day with 32 points – including 20-of-22 from the free throw line – with 14 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Howard also had another outstanding performance with 25 points – an new career-high – with seven assists, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Carlton Brundidge also pitched in 19 points with five rebounds and two assists, while freshman guard Matthew Grant added 11 points.

The Titans led by as much as five in the second overtime 93-88 with 1:27 left, before Anthony Jackson was fouled while draining a three-pointer to convert a four-point play and bring the Seawolves back to within one 93-92 with 1:14 left. Grant then split a pair of free throws to make the lead 94-92, before Warney made a layup with nine seconds left to force the third overtime.

The first overtime saw Stony Brook (5-2) jump out to an early four-point lead 79-75, and then 81-77 with 1:41 left, before four straight free throws from Howard and Bruinsma tied the score in the closing seconds.

The second half was filled with runs as both teams led by as much as 10. Detroit started the half with five quick points to go up 44-34 with 18 minutes remaining, before Stony Brook answered back with a 20-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 54-44 lead with 10:24 left. The Titans then responded with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 54-50 with nine minutes left, before eventually tying the score at 60 with 5:16 remaining. Detroit then regained the lead with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to go up 68-62. The Titans would hold that lead until Jackson drained a three-pointer from deep in the corner as time expired to force overtime 75-75.

Stony Brook led by as much as six, 14-8, early in the first half, before Detroit responded with a 31-15 run to build a 39-29 lead with just under a minute to go in the opening stanza. A three-pointer from Scott King trimmed the Titans lead to 39-32 as both teams entered the locker room. Howard led Detroit with 11 points, while Brundidge had eight and Bruinsma six.

Detroit shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) overall, including 26.5 percent (9-of-34) from downtown, while Stony Brook shot 45 percent (36-of-80) overall, including 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from beyond the arc. The Seawolves won the battle on boards 49-42, including 18 on the offensive glass, but the Titans made up for that by making 37-of-43 free throws compared to Stony Brook's 23-of-29 for the charity stripe. Detroit also forced 13 turnovers and blocked five shots in the game.

Stony Brook was led by Warney, who finished with 32 points and 21 rebounds – 11 offensive boards – while Jackson had 24 points and six assists. Carson Puriefoy pitched in 16 points, while Dave Coley added 14.

Warney was named the 2K Sports Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project Player of the Tournament, while both Jackson and Howard were named to the all-Tournament team. Toledo's Julius Brown and Florida Atlantic's Pablo Bertone were also named to the team.

Detroit will hit the road to visit South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at the Sun Dome  and will be carried live on ESPN3. Fans can also listen to the game live on 1270 AM with Dan Leach the new voice of the Titans.

GAME NOTES: The triple overtime game was the first for Detroit since beating Michigan State 84-82 on Dec. 14, 1996 … Evan Bruinsma's 20 made free throws are both a school and Horizon League record, the previous record was 19 by Brandon Cotton … Juwan Howard Jr. has scored in double figures in all seven games this season … The Titans have lost back-to-back games at Calihan Hall for the first time since 2011 when they dropped a pair of games to Butler (87-64) and Valparaiso (78-68) … It is also the first time the Titans have lost back-to-back home games against non-conference opponents since losing to Ball State (59-44) and Bowling Green (59-53) in 2004.
