ANNAPOLIS, Md. (2/15/2013) -- Junior
Shayne Adams scored four goals and the Detroit Titans fought back from a six-goal deficit to make it an interesting fourth quarter as UDM fell to Navy, 11-7, on Friday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Adams also added an assist in the contest. Sophomore
Chris Kelly made 11 saves in net, while senior defenseman
Jamie Hebden tied his career-high with five caused turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Detroit (0-2) got on the board first thanks to its defense as Hebden stole a pass and headed up field where, in transition, he found Adams who beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead about seven minutes into the game.
Detroit continued that 1-0 advantage for the next six minutes as Kelly made a few saves and the defense forced four turnovers, but the Midshipmen knotted the score at 1-all off a failed clear by UDM.
Navy (2-0) jumped in front with two-straight goals in the second, but the Titans cut that to just one as redshirt freshman
Damien Hicks won a faceoff and streaked down the field beating the goalie for his first collegiate marker at the 5:02 mark. The Midshipmen then scored three goals in the last five minute to take a 6-2 lead at the break.
The Midshipmen would took an 8-2 lead, but late in the third, junior
Alex Maini found Adams who recorded his second of the game to make it 8-3 after three. Adams then got his 13th career hat trick early in the fourth as he scooped up a ground ball right in front of the goal and went behind his back to beat the goalie to get UDM within 9-4 with 12:24 left.
Navy put two more scores on the board, but Detroit fought back by scoring three straight starting with Adams finding Maini this time at the 7:37 mark. A pair of sophomores then came together as
Brandon Beauregard fed
Mike Birney for his fourth goal of the season with 6:34 left and Adams tallied his fourth with 4:30 remaining to pull the red, white and blue within four, 11-7.
That was as close as Detroit would get as the Titans had a chance to inch closer, but could not take advantage of a few Navy miscues.
Detroit caused 13 of Navy's 26 turnovers as senior
Jordan Houtby and
John Dwyer each had two apiece. Houtby also corralled three ground balls, while senior
Tyler Corcoran had four and won 9-of-12 faceoffs. The Titan defense also held strong with the man down allowing just one goal in six chances.
The Titans will now end their three-game season-opening round trip at Robert Morris next Saturday. Game time is set for Noon at Joe Walton Field in Moon Township, Pa.
