LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (2/22/2013) -- Senior
Zaynib Hamze had two goals and an assist in Friday's afternoon match-up at Siena, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell by a 13-7 score to the Saints.
Siena (1-1) had a 5-4 lead heading into halftime before scoring eight goals in the second half to hold on to the 13-7 decision.
“We came out strong in the first half and really played well early taking the lead,” said UDM women's lacrosse head coach
Laura Maness. “We weren't able to hold on even though we forced them into a lot of turnovers, but then we would give it right back so we still have a few more things we need to work on.”
Megan Callahan put the Titans (0-2) on the board first with a free position goal just 1:39 into the game.
Kylie Birney added the first of her young career taking a pass from
Erin Campbell to put Detroit up 2-0 with 26:54 to go in the opening half. Hamze continued the Titan scoring with her first of the season taking a pass from
Tessa Keuler to make it 3-0 Detroit, forcing a Saints timeout to regroup.
Right after the timeout, the Saints scored to cut the lead to 3-1, and they would add two more goals and tie the game before Keuler netted her first of the day and third of the year with a free position goal at the 10:01 mark of the opening frame. With the score 4-3, the Saints added another with 1:10 to go before the regaining the lead, 5-4, with 25.7 seconds remaining in the half.
UDM goalie
Lexie McCormick made eight saves in the opening half, including the first two shots she saw of the game with both of those first two chances on point-blank opportunities. Detroit also forced 11 Siena turnovers and cleared eight of 10 opportunities.
The second half saw Siena come out with three straight goals holding Detroit without a goal for a span of 18:57 before Hamze tallied her second of the day with 21:04 to go in regulation.
With the score 8-5 in favor of Siena, UDM and the Saints traded goals as
Lindsey Saunders scored her first of the season taking a pass from Hamze and making the score 9-6 with 13:45 remaining on the clock.
Siena added two more goals before Campbell scored her first of the season, and her first since March 25, 2011 at Liberty, to trim the deficit to 11-7 before the Saints went on to score two more.
McCormick finished with 15 saves in net, a new career high, for UDM in a game that was littered with turnovers on both sides. UDM committed 22 and Siena had 20, with the Saints holding an overall 34-22 shooting advantage and a 26-21 lead in ground balls. Siena had 29 fouls on the day to 16 for Detroit and UDM finished 13-19 overall on clears compared to Siena's 14-of-23 mark.
Detroit will continue the 2013 season on Sunday with a game at Delaware State scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
