DOVER, Del. (2/24/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2013 season with a 15-1 victory over Delaware State Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Nine different Titans (1-2) scored for Detroit and
Tessa Keuler and
Erin Campbell each had three goals to lead the Titans past the Hornets, a first year women's lacrosse program.
“We did not want to take Delaware State lightly and we came out strong and played a good game,” said UDM women's lacrosse head coach
Laura Maness. “We had a chance to play everyone today, move people around the field, and work on our defensive game.”
Michaela Schwartz scored the first goal for the Titans taking a pass from Campbell 1:17 into the game. Eight different Titans would score in the first half as Detroit had complete control throughout the opening frame. Campbell then tallied her first of three and Keuler followed with her first of three on a free position shot to make it 3-0 Detroit.
Kylie Birney was up next with a tally 3:16 into the game before Campbell added her second of the day taking a pass from Schwartz to make the score 5-0. Keuler would add her second goal before senior captain
Zaynib Hamze put her name on the score sheet with the seventh Titan goal.
Lindsey Saunders took her turn scoring her first of the day next as she received a pass from Hamze before Campbell, Keuler, and Schwartz added single markers in a row before Saunders' second of the day. That second goal from Saunders with 9:46 left in the first half gave Detroit a 12-0 lead and it gave Saunders, her 50th career goal.
The UDM offense was not finished just yet as a pair of freshmen scored their first career goals. It was
Ivy Marshall first, who took a pass from
Jenna Payne with 8:16 to go and lit the lamp first followed by
Ally Shrader, who registered an unassisted tally with 4:08 remaining.
The Titans were up 14-0 at that point and had a 23-1 shooting advantage after the first half of play.
In the second half of action, Payne added to her point total on the day and scored on a free position attempt with 25:58 to go and that was the final tally for the Detroit's offense.
Delaware State, playing in its first ever women's lacrosse home game, did get on the board with 11:03 remaining in regulation on a free position attempt to make the score 15-1.
UDM had the chance to play everyone available for the contest as goaltenders
Lexie McCormick,
Melissa Anderson, and
Ty Dykes all had the opportunity to see playing time. Dykes was the lone Titan with a save stopping a free position just before the lone Hornet goal was scored. Freshman
Ellery Alexander also made her Titan debut in the second half.
Defenders
Morgan Miller and
Amanda Guthrie each had three ground balls, while
Taylor Marshall collected four along with four caused turnovers.
Senior captain
Megan Callahan grabbed one ground ball, two draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers and
Britany Busch had one of draw control, a ground ball, and a caused a turnover.
UDM will be back with another road game next Sunday, Mar. 3, against another first-year program in Marquette. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
