SOUTH BEND, Ind. (2/25/2013) -- In the final weekend of competition before the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams were in action at the Notre Dame Duals on Saturday and the women's sabre team had three individuals combine for 20 wins.

Teams from Lawrence, Air Force, Wayne State, Northwestern, Cleveland State, and Notre Dame all had varsity teams in competition on Saturday.

It was the women's sabre squad that once again led the group of UDM fencers as sophomore Katie Lang and junior Eva Berndt both finished with 7-9 records on the day and junior Shannon Canavan went 6-10 overall. The trio came up with a sweep over Cleveland State 9-0 and a 6-3 win over Wayne State while falling in a close match to Northwestern 5-4.

Also on the women's side, UDM men's and women's fencing head coach Todd Dressell was pleased with freshman Roby Wong on his women's foil team who grabbed three big wins on the day.

“Roby was a nice surprise hanging in there for a number of tough bouts and she has really come along well this year and I think she will only get better.”

Another highlight on the women's side came from Kaylah Berndt of the women's epee team who had four wins and performed well for the second straight competition after winning tough individual bouts at the Northwestern Mega-Meet on Feb. 3.

Overall the women's team captured a 20-7 win over Cleveland State and was not far off against Wayne State 19-8 and Lawrence by a 17-10 margin. UDM also fell to Northwestern, Air Force, and were shutout by a tough Notre Dame squad, 27-0.

The men's side had freshman Andrew Gibbons from the men's sabre team post the high win total on the day with six overall wins. Two of his wins came via the shutout variety.

Senior Clint Mikek from men's epee came up with four wins and junior's Cole Goike and Elijah Robertson, both from men's foil each had four victories.

The men's team had a number of tough match-ups on the day falling to Wayne State, 16-11, and Northwestern State, 20-7, while falling in competition to Lawrence, Notre Dame, Air Force, and Cleveland State.

“We still have a fairly young group of fencers this year but I was hoping we could have stolen a few more wins today," said Dressell. "We continue to work with everyone on their individual technical skill and improvement comes with experience and that's what we're looking for moving forward."

The Midwest Fencing Conference Championships will be March 2-3 as UDM will head to South Bend, Ind.
