YOUNGSTOWN , Ohio (2/7/2013) -- Senior
Demeisha Fambro had a team-high 16 points and sophomore
Shareta Brown netted 15, but that was not enough as the UDM women's basketball team rallied but dropped a physical contest at Youngstown State, 58-53, on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.
The game featured 40 fouls, but Detroit (12-8, 5-3 HL) cut a one-time 11-point margin down to just three with a few chances to tie the game in the final minute, but all four of the Titans' 3-point attempts just would not fall.
After junior
Senee Shearer nailed a triple to get UDM within three, 59-56, with 57 seconds left, the Titans put the pressure on to get the ball back and did just that forcing a pass out of bounds.
On the ensuing possession, Shearer lined up straight with the basket, but her three went off the rim, only to be rebounded by sophomore
Audrey Matteson, who then found freshman
Rosanna Reynolds on the outside for another game-tying attempt. Reynolds' trey bounced off the rim and once again Matteson fought for the offensive board and kicked it out to Fambro with 13 seconds on the clock.
Fambro's attempt was long and YSU got the board this time, but Reynolds forced a tie-up and the Titans regained possession with nine ticks left. After Youngstown State (16-5, 6-2 HL) called timeout, Detroit set up the final play, but Matteson's triple missed wide and this time the Penguins corralled the rebound and hit two free throws the other way.
Fambro ended the game by tying her career high with nine rebounds. Brown had 10 boards and three steals to go with her 15 points, while Shearer had seven and Matteson added six markers and six caroms.
Detroit trailed by four at the break, but scored eight of the second half's first 11 points to go up, 33-32, with 15:53 left. UDM would later lead by one, 39-38, at the 12:31 mark, but that is when YSU opened the game up with a 10-0 run covering the next four minutes.
The Penguins would eventually open their biggest lead of 11 three times, the latest at 56-45, with 4:55 remaining, but the UDM defense held firm and kept them off the scoreboard for the next 4:52, cutting the deficit all the way down to three.
Reynolds finished with four points, four rebounds, and five assists and junior
Megan Hatter tallied five points and two rebounds. Senior
Yar Shayok came away with nine boards.
The Titans held YSU to just 21.6% shooting from the outside (8-of-37) and outrebounded the Penguins, 48-38, while forcing 15 turnovers.
It was as physical as could be in the first half as both teams combined for 21 fouls. UDM got off to a 6-0 start and led 9-2 as Fambro nailed a 3-pointer at the 15:49 mark. YSU then erased that with seven-straight points and took its first lead, 12-10, with 11:54 left.
The Titans jumped back in front by four, 16-12, and had a 21-18 advantage with 6:41 left in the period when the Penguins went on an 11-2 run to take 29-23 lead and the red, white and blue headed into the half down, 29-25.
Brown had 11 points and eight rebounds at that point, while Fambro netted nine in the first stanza.
The Titans will now get ready for Valparaiso on Saturday with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m. The game will put the finishing touches on the Titans' Annual Girls & Women in Sports Day. All girls ages 6-13 are invited to be part of an exciting schedule of events, which will start at 11:00 a.m. The day will feature a variety of sports clinics at Calihan Hall, where student-athletes from nearly all of UDM's varsity teams will provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations.
