DETROIT (3/13/2013) -- Sophomore goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick posted a career-high 16 saves, but the standout performance was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team was upended by the Louisville Cardinals of the BIG EAST, 19-2, on a snowy Wednesday afternoon game at Titan Field.
Junior
Erin Campbell and sophomore
Tessa Keuler tallied goals for Detroit (1-6), while sophomore
Amanda Guthrie picked up a team-high five ground balls.
McCormick, the reigning Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, also had two ground balls and her 16 saves were one more than her previous season high of 15, set at Siena (2/22) earlier this season. She made a number of high profile saves in the opening half including thwarting four free-position attempts from the Cardinals.
Louisville (6-1) began the year ranked No. 20 in the first week of the IWLCA poll, and came into the game receiving votes in the national poll and it showed as the Cardinals struck for four goals in the first seven minutes. UDM tried mounting an attack, but Louisville's defense was tough to crack as the Titans trailed 9-0 at the half.
UDM would get on the board in the second half as Campbell found the back of the net, her fifth tally of the year, with 27:53 remaining in regulation. Another goal from Detroit came with 9:31 to play that was started on defense as senior
Lindsey Saunders caused a turnover and fellow senior
Zaynib Hamze picked up the ground ball. Keuler was then able to finish the play on a free-position attempt for her seventh goal and ninth point of the year.
Detroit nearly won the battle of ground balls with Louisville having a narrow 26-24 advantage and UDM also forced 23 Cardinal turnovers.
Hamze ended the game with four ground balls while senior
Britany Busch had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The next game for Detroit will be at Titan Field on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. as UDM will wrap up a three-game home stand against Campbell. Individual home game tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for group tickets (groups of 15 or more). UDM faculty, staff, and students are always FREE.
